Everytime I installed beta of anything, whether it be internet explorer, drivers, whatever - something else always was broken on it. End up always going back to final release. Now, I dont bother unless its something that I really need to work.

that's why they are beta
but there has never been a videocard driver that is equally stable for every card or revision
for some cards this might be more stable than for others, beta or not
there's practically no difference between stability of beta or final videocard driver releases - some just have the WHQL signature so the installer won't bitch about not having one

the 180.84 drivers are running stable on my system also with 2 x 8800 gt
they bring a little 5 fps or so more performance and also enable sli on gta4
btw i tried gta 4 on windows 7 6956
i didnt notice any performance difference compare to my vista 64 sp1 os
i got arround 25 40 fps on vista,but its not lagy
my cpu usage on q6600 is arround 40,60
best gta version ever for me so far beside of the performance and rendering problems.
game is very good i love it Very Happy

That game is awesome.
Nothing I will be playing for long, but great fun for those minutes you are waiting for your mates to join *putyourfavoriteonlinegameinhere* .

I wasn`t laughing while playing a game for a long time, but this one really lets me burst out in laughter from time to time.

1) execute magic.bat
2) reemplace .pak from the "magic zip" to the original (make a backup first)
3) edit visualsettings.txt ->search for a line with the word bloom
4) save and run the game?

That should be correct, though I don't recommend using the .bat file as it would create a copy of most game files and you probably have no interest in editing more than a few of them.

Make a copy of files.txt and also a backup of (In the same folder as the EXE files are.) and open files.txt, alter the last line from files.txt to the copy (In my case it's named files_mod.txt)

Now copy and open visualsettings.dat (I just renamed the copy visualsettings_.dat) and change

misc.BloomIntensityClamp.HD 10
misc.BloomIntensityClamp.SD 10.00

to 0 in order to disable bloom though the performance gain from doing this varies depending on GPU power.

Finally open files.txt and change visualsettings.dat to visualsettings_.dat or whatever you renamed the backup to.

Game should start and allow you to modify any file as long as you repeat the above procedure.

Hope that explains it without needing to copy every file in the game folders. (Takes up space.)


EDIT: As a bonus do the same with and open loadingscreens_pc.dat and change the six first entries (From "legal screen" to "blank") and change duration to "1" to disable logo movies.
(Will just quickly flash by, menu still takes a while to load and a bit longer if you're also signed into the "Social Club" as it updates with various news and such.)

EDIT: Timecyc.dat in pc/data (Instead of common/data) also handles lighting depending on the time-of-day setting. (Not exactly easy to modify but very customizable.)

a quastion about ati drivers

Haven't had to update my ati drivers yet (new comp, always had nvidea cards)

So, I go to device manager, and run that driver program.
But what about the catalyst control center? Does it get uninstalled to? Or do I download only drivers from ati site and keep this ccc????

Dumb question I know, but wanna know this for sure

Thats is consfusing.
Because what i do is this
1) Just make 2 copies from files.txt
the first copy is Files_original.txt
the second copy is Files_mod.txt
2) To Files.txt I modified the last line to Files_mod.txt And Also Deleted the line common\data\loading_screens_pc.dat
3)To Files_mod.txt I deleted ALL THE LINES! and only i add the
common\data\loadingscreens_pc_modificado.dat

So basicly Files.txt make a chain to Files_Mod.txt to open the Blank Videos

But the games do not run :S so something is bad..

The game is very integrated with this "Windows Live" system and so each file is protected from alteration (Some SHA1 encryption from what I've read.)

What you do is three things.

Filelist.pak contains cached versions of some data files so by renaming it (For backup purposes) and using a blank "pre-patched" version you make the game use the actual data files.

Files.txt contains a list of protected files and this is what the game will read.

By changing a few things around as I described above you'll make the game read the data from the backup files while loading the modified files thus fooling the game protection.

If the game detects modified files it'll just close shortly after being started, it can also detect changes in the actual game and force a crash after a minute or so of playing.

Thus you can either make a backup of every protected file via that batch file or use a loader (Memory handling differs between XP and Vista so loaders apparently don't work on Vista due to how the game is compiled.)

Same with the method I mention but you only back up the files you are interested in modifying. Smile

Files_.txt (The original backup, safety precaution) and Files_mod.txt are identical whereas Files.txt contains the changed files.

So instead of looking like this.

....
pc\data\paths\distantlights.dat
files.txt

Files.txt looks like this.

pc\data\paths\distantlights.dat
files_mod.txt

And this instead of this.

Files.txt
common\data\loadingscreens_pc_.dat

Files_mod.txt
common\data\loadingscreens_pc.dat

This is a bit cumbersome to explain but fairly easy to maintain.

Hope that helps explaining it, I'm not all that good with explanations.
(There's a pretty good walktrough of this on that forum thread on GTA forums.)

So to recap you have the original files as visualsettings_.dat and the modified files as visualsettings.dat and thus fool the protection system.

This is temporary though, Rockstar could easily change this system and totally block of modding aside from EXE memory patches hacking the actual protection. (Those loaders.)

I missed the filelist.pak file in the archive so that's probably why it doesn't work as it's also one of the protected files.

As can be seen by this line in the files.txt file in the archive I uploaded.
pc\data\filelist_.pak
(Instead of using the original filelist.pak entry.)

go to start - run - msconfig - startup

see if u have the 2 files named msime80.exe and msfir80.exe running

Obviously you download from public torrents without even reading some comments, happily executing every .exe you can find, no?. Because NO the real loader didn't come with trojans afaik.

The game is a blast when it runs for me, I need a bigger videocard-memory I'm sure. Thats probably why it runs like a total turd for me, considering switching to ATI for the next one (4850). For now, I have to play short times before it starts to slow down to a crawl.

Press P people. You will see depth of field, motionblur and some other postprocessing effects. But you won't see a drop in FPS. So if you don't use this effects they seem to be rendered to. How can I turn off this postprocessing effects? I don't need bloom, blur and shit. I need more fps Smile

1. Anyone has a clue about the fatal error zlib20? i can't find a proper solution for it, and its not listed on the "error codes" provided by rockstar. I think it only happens on vista64. According to rockstar forum replies by users reinstall doesn't fix it either.

2. Any way to enable/force AA to the game? doesn't seem to work from nvidia panel.

Other than that game runs fine with Q6600 @ 3.2ghz, 4gb ddr2, 8800ultra with 180.84, max settings @ 1680x1050, for 20mins that is till ctd.

Every time I'm given a vehicle on a chase mission, it handles like shit and drivers become suicidal and ram into me. Are R* doing this shit on purpose to increase difficulty? It's fucking bullshit.
