In the graphics options menu. Set Shadow Density to 0. |
This doesn't remove the shadows...

Disabling shadows completely is impossible, atleast without heavy alterations to certain files as there's nothing about shadows in the two files visualsettings.dat and visualsettings.xls
There's a value for shadows for what seems to be vegetation but it doesn't affect the main shadow type during daytime which seems to come from the sun.
Shader editing might help but the engine is pretty unique in how it works from how I see it atleast.
(Based mostly on the IGN interview linked to previously.)
Speaking of visualsettings.dat
misc.BloomIntensityClamp.HD 10
misc.BloomIntensityClamp.SD 10.00
The above two values control bloom strength, file can be edited in notepad but do read the thread I linked to previously or use the loader as the game won't load modified files (Some file check protection, can't say much about it as I don't really understand it all that well, the gta forums has a bit of info though.)
Increasing it further strengthens bloom and decreasing it lowers the effect, to be honest I saw a very small fluctuation in framerate so I don't think it would do much for performance.
(Hard to explain but think of it as a lightbulb, you can control the strength of the light but it's still "on" even if you dim it, perhaps different with lower-end hardware.)
misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.HD 1
misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.SD 0.5
These two control the DoF strength, mostly visible when hitting the "p" key and I found that increasing them nearly "embossed" the distant buildings as seen by the screen I posted around page 21 of this thread.
(There are other values for blur and depth of field as well though, needs more tweaking.)
As for the crack increasing performance I doubt it would do anything, perhaps possible if something disabled the overlay from Windows: Live but it's pretty well integrated in the game and can't really be removed. (Might be similar for the Social Club application.)
Disabling the built in video editor from the option menu once in the actual game might also help performance a bit.
Bit technical and obviously I don't fully understand everything about the game or how certain parts of it works, better to read the editing threads on the gta forums and similar as there's quite a bit of activity there.
EDIT: Patch is being tested by Microsoft at the moment (Also based on a recent Rockstar interview posted previously.) so it might be released early next week. (This monday to friday that is, I guess it'll be released fairly soon though.)

It's not the same. Check shadows while you do it. Most of them disappear when you set it to 0.

Well the developers did admit that certain video cards had problems with the game, notably the 7xxx serie from NVIDIA (Mostly fixed by 180.84 drivers but from what I've read the GX2 card still has problems and there's some minor issues remaining.) and the 1xxx serie from ATI (Cat 8.12 might help but I'd guess a specific hotfix released afterwards would be better or Cat 9.1)

Yo, JBeckman...
You think its possible to use Shaders from another GFX card on a 8 series and get more FPS ???
Dont know about this, just thinking...
Also, the game needs to terminate Bloom totally in order to be fully free of that shit...
Yes, you can turn Bloom to 0 and I get a higher FPS, with higher GFX, so its not all a waste...
