Please help!

I have Windows Vista Ultimate for my Media Centre PC. I have been having issues with codecs on it. Basically, I installed Haali (sp?) and FFDshow, being told they're the only two I need. However, playing certain 1080p .mkv files, the audio is completely out of sync. Some .xvids have really shitty audio too (distored). So I uninstalled and tried the latest version of CCCP, this didn't work. Heck, I even tried installing CoreAVC (Even though its a vid codec and not audio), but that didn't help.

I'm sure all I need is FFDshow, and the correct settings. Can anyone help?

There must be some gurus here...

What CPU do you have? Can your PC handle high bitrate 1080p videos? Hate to ask such questions, but it's a start. Indeed, Haali + Ffdshow is the way to go, but let's see about the PC first.

Yo. It's pretty powerful. Just built, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4850e 2.5GHz, Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2, Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G

So I doubt it's a hardware issue... :/

It's funny, the specific prisonbreak file which I'm having problems with (sector7-prisonbreak.s03e11.1080p-x264.mkv) is completely fine on my PC (XP + ffdshow). Plus, the picture looks alot sharper and the audio is in sync Sad :s ...

:\ Nope, not hardware. What version of ffdshow do you have on Vista? Make sure to use the latest beta build of FFDSHOW Tryouts, not the old one on their site. Another issue could be Vista's slower HD access. Make sure you increase the buffer size in Haali.

Try CoreAVC.Professional.Edition.v1.7.0.0-EDGE, it´s the fastest H.264 video decoder.

Latest version is 1.8.5

Tried CoreAVC - but it's not an audio decoder so didn't fix the problme?

And how do I change the buffer size in Haali? The closest thing I can see is Input Buffer Size which is 8192 - what should I change this to?

So I tried a higher cache (12000 something) along with FFDShow tryouts and the issue is still there, but not so bad. Audio is now probably out by about a second...

Very strange, you know? My buffer size is 16384, and I it's more than enough. Do you have the Post Processing option enabled in FFDSHOW?

Another thing you could try is instead of FFDSHOW (set all codecs in audio config to disabled), try using AC3 Filter.

Last resort, try using the latest KMPlayer. It's good and it should be fast enough.

Update, I reinstalled XP and it's STILL DOING IT.

It must be a hardware / driver thing, but i'm screwed as i have no idea what it is!

I tried reinstalling the ATI HDMI Audio drivers (passing vid + sound through the HDMI), got the latest AMD gfx drivers (onboard vid is radeon hd 2300), and still nothing.

I have no idea what to do... only seems to be a problem on 1080p files...

Let me give you final suggestion for now (can't think of something else). Try disabling FFDShow's h264 codec and install PowerDVD. Their decoder supports hardware acceleration, so that might boost things up.

BTW, what kind of hard drive are the 1080p files? This could be the bottleneck, but it's highly unlikely.

what are you playing them with? when you play the video, can you check what codecs are running?

(I get this with MPC)

make sure the program is using what you think it is ... I had to manually select coreavc to use it by default.

Right, using CoreAVC as the video filter, it is now playing in sync, however I cannot for the life of me get it to output in 5.1 audio any more. I'm using ffdshow audio, and the following configs:

http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=config1kh5.jpg
http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=config2ww7.jpg
http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=config3ws2.jpg
http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=config4ur8.jpg

If I select AC3 (SP/DIF encode mode) and then choose encode only 5.1 channel streams), Windows Media Player doesn't find an audio codec. Likewise, if I select LPCM windows does not find an audio codec!

Please help!

Did you try removing the mixer option, or setting it to 5.1 setting? Maybe that's the problem.

Strangely I got it to work!

I uninstalled the latest ATI HDMI Drivers, then I unistalled AVC Filter.

Using FFDShow + CoreAVC + Haali it seems to work...

No lag and no issues... how wierd!

knew it wasnt hardware!!

I had the same problem. But I installed the newest K-Lite package and it works fine now.
