Try exploring the whole map and following all side quests. Only the main story is short.

Yeah, I've clocked up over 25hrs and I haven't even been to GNR yet.

well, it still is fairly short
i visited every location and nook and crevice and completed everything in four days
every minor and major quest there is - and there really isn't that many
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_quests
there's nothing to do in towns apart from the few people that actually have a quest attached to them, so they're mostly a waste of time in trying to figure out which ones they are
shops are useless as weapons and supplies have no real value due to their abundance in the "wasteland"

here's fallout 2 quests;

It's not a waste of time if you have fun doing it.

Not everything needs exp and money attached to it with a little entry in your quest log to be worth doing.

Hate to say it, but you just played it wrong. Not everyone's cup of tea though.

And I also have a very very hard time believing you explored every location fully in 4 days, unless you played nonstop and even then.. I doubt it.

I've played 2 characters fully through the game and each took 50+ hours. Both played very different, doing a few different quests on each and doing the shared ones in completely different ways.

My third character is doing it differently yet again and I know of at least 2 listed side quests I've yet to do and a ton of locations I never visited.

yes, sure, i'd love to have some plain backstory with no progression in towns, but there is almost nothing.. nearly all the non-quest characters give same carbon copy responses
best you can get are logs and diaries written on computer terminals
everything is as thin as possible
like they spent a while writing down quests in pre-production, then building a huge world around those guests and never adding more to the world beyond the original plan

Mine was just over 30hrs, but it was on the 360 and I still don't like gamepad that much, so I didn't explore nearly as much as I could have... Bet I can easily double that when I play again on PC. Still might not be enough to top my record of BG2+ToB, which was over 104 hours at the end. Very Happy

I agree, the main motivation for this game comes not from completing the mainquest, but exploring the immersive world, enjoying the atmosphere created by the world-, level- and location-design.
Its basically the same as with Morrowind and Oblivion. Even long time after completing them and the add-ons and user-mods I returned to these games again and again, only for a bit more of exploring and watching nice details, enjoying the world and a few fights. Sure there are less quests in F3 than in the ElderScrolls games, but still Bethesda is for me the best game designer in terms of world-creating.
I think I already spent more than 100 hours in F3 and still the Mainquest is not finished and not all locations are revealed. I play this game "slowly" to really enjoy all of it. This is a rare thing in these times. Smile

One must have really good imagination and patience to enjoy F3 "just as it is". I mean, for me exploring lost value quite soon when I realized that a) there is no more new items to find anymore, b) the enemies are scaling, and there will be no unique enemies and c) there will be no quests related to the locations, no NPC's to meet there.

After that realization I simply skimmed through the rest of the main quest and deleted the game.

It's hard to maintain immersion when you realize that the few details of the gameworld are just that - loose details. Like when you discover the dark secrets of the entire Megaton through a certain computer terminal. Can you confront the people about this? No. Can you snoop around their house to find more about their secrets? No. Does it have any connection to the game at all? No.

Nice with a kid killer mod, some of those little bastards in Little Lamplight deserve to go. First on my list in the Mayor and then Zip. What the hell, I'll kill all the little bastards, except the one I can enslave.

Quite a funny episode happened last night: I was wandering around the wastes when a group of slavers (friendly ones; that alone is uncommon) chased a poor unarmed raider around. They eventually killed him and then stood by the corpse and drank Nuka Cola.

Weird guys.

My favorite example so far of this happenned recently.

After doing a couple of side quests to assist Megaton when enterring the town a woman walked up to me

"It's not much but it's all I can afforsd, please accept this as thanks for all you have done for us"

+16 caps, cheers love.

She walks off, I catch up to her and press interact, she replis:
"Leave me alone, I don't talk to strangers".

2 secs ago I was her hero now I'm a stranger and can just fuck right off? That's a real WTF moment to destroy the immersion. Lol.

Stealing is also great. First I talk some guard into allowing me to pass through his guardpost, I then steal everything that he has there. Machine guns, ammo, med pacs and his lunch. I get couple of bad carma points, I'm still considered a saint and next time we talk he kindly welcome me.

Not to mention there's a guy sat outside every town awaiting free water to fix your karma. And just in case you're tempted to not give him free water you get given free water at your house to pass onto him.

Hitler would have been a saintly guy on this game if he'd had a water tanker with him.

Dunno why but I'm still finding it strangely enjoyable. Just with lots of strange quirks.

Does the image on youknowwhatworld.com work with the patch? Cause there are no cracked patches .exe, or can I use the .exe from reloaded with the patch?

Latest YASU has worked with everything I've tried it with so far.
(Posted about it in the "Protection Bitching" section.)

Better yet, that latest version leaked to GCW a short while ago.
(Seems they're thinking of making it public again instead of just for DT customers.)

It's a design decision really. If it wouldn't finish, the story ending would make zero sense. There should be atleast a warning of some kind before you pass the point of no return.

yeap your right.

but no problem, just save before doing the last main quest and you are good to go Smile

anyways it seems the new DLC will allow to play past the main quest

"Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March."
