Posted: Fri, 21st Nov 2008 08:41 Post subject: Ideas for a new last name |
|
 |
I'll preface this with a disclaimer. I've noticed a significant amount of disrespect going on around these parts lately. I'd appreciate trying to stay as civil as possible here.
Essentially, I am the last person in my bloodline with the possibility of passing my last name on. It is polish, I hate it and frankly, I do not want to carry the family name with me anymore. I don't want my wife and I (when I get one) to have to decide whether to name the child my name or hers, or if she wants to take my last name because of how awful it is and how little it means to me.
I have begun the proceedings to legally change my last name, I've got the paper work filled out to start the court process, except one thing is missing. The new name. I can't make a decision on a name.
What I want is my name to be something in a foreign language, preferably an old british language (gaelic etc), or french. Russian would also be acceptable, but it'd have to be an amazing exception. I'd like it to mean something like newly stitched, new connection, new life. Something along those lines.
So toss your ideas out there, your idea may be my legal last name !

my advice as a psychologist. Take a name that sounds well, as that will make it more likely for women to like it / you. From research we know that women prefer names with a, e and i in it.
And it should go well with your surname. So that it rolls of the tongue well.
Ignoring all of the above, i d suggest "bongo bongo" because i had a debate about names for children with my sister, who is pregnant and due in a few months. She naturally didnt like my idea though

Wish Lutz hadn't said that, now I have this terrible mental image of his avatar and Sigmund Freud combined (ok so he was a psychiatrist, but I don't know any famous psychologists!).

Kampinski, Kampusch, Schwarz, Berger, De Barr,
I like these. I like a lot of German, Holland and some Russian last names.

but why go with an already existing name anyways?
change it to something strong but unheard of like Rockular
Or go with something like Maximus! (with the exclamation-mark )
or try to find something that describes you as a person.

I have no idea what your first name is, I can not see it in your post but you expect it to roll off the tongue we would be shooting in the dark without knowing..

"Capacitor"

Old gaelic surnames, eh? Someone has been watching too much Million Dollar Baby.
I do understand the need to change your surname though. Personally I changed mine from my father's side of the family to my mother's side of the family. Because it's important for me to feel connected to something that has a significance in my life. Whereas I did not feel very connected to my father and his side of the family, I did with my mothers - and hence I took her family's name. Which coincidentally has a meaning in latin, just like my middle name.
A name is something you identify yourself with, so to ignore the history of your life, your roots seems a bit rash. Perhaps you could look in the family archives on one of your significant others to see if there is a name that would suit you better?
I also think fisk should be unbanned.

Well, phlux, I have a suspicion you still pronounce your last name in a polish way. I have a funny last name and if i pronounce it how its supposed to be, its dumb and annyoing.
But my dad and mom 'canadianized it" a long time ago (party cause my mom couldnt pronounce it).
So now it comes across as a Canadian name. And no one thinks differently....unless I tell someone how its truly pronounced.
So just canadianized your name. Easier than changing your name. Since your male, you shouldnt change your last name bro...you have to carry on the blood line ( I know thats a traditional way of looking at it, but its the truth).
