Fortunately, EA is not known for heavy protections.. Then again, why bother with nasty protection as the game will sell regardless due to hype?

My last post was made to disagree with pallebrun, this one is to agree with him. That guy sure gets around, doesn't he?
SM3.0 (PS3.0 + VS3.0) is a requirement for DX9.0c compliance, and its specifications offer several advantages. FP32 (128-bit) precision, infinite instruction length (both pixel and shader), displacement mapping with vertex texture fetching, dynamic flow control and branching, and geometry instancing. Let's take these one at a time.
The NV4x series of cards supports FP32 and FP16 (as well as legacy FP12) like its cousin, the NV3x. However, the performance impact from using FP32 is greatly diminished in the NV4x (although still a reality). FP32 implies improved precision, but only if developers utilize it...and remember that it also requires more memory versus ATI's 24-bit. Developers prefer FP16 for most instances, and FP24 in some; the need for FP32 isn't really here yet. The real advantage of FP32 is to allow full SM3.0 specification as well as FP32 HDR, which is why NVIDIA supports it. Any quality advances are at least a year away.
Instruction length is irrelevant for the most part. Even relatively long shaders by today's standards easily fit into SM2.0 and SM2.0b. If longer ones were to appear, they could still be broken up, so the only advantage is performance. The concept of quality improvement (with this and SM3.0 in general) is based around the idea of better performance offering the opportunity for better quality at similar framerates; the truth is, cards today would not realize this at all, and quality "potential" is identical. Where it is used now is with combining shaders (usually lighting), which does produce some performance benefit, but ultimately fill-rate and memory bandwidth are the biggest determinants of raw performance.
Displacement mapping is actually supported in SM2.0, just by a different method. So there's only a performance advantage, here. Dynamic flow and branching is nice (although it can be emulated under SM2.0), but it's only a performance enhancement. Likewise for geometry instancing, which SM2.0b supports as well. And a SM2.0 engine would not give a performance boost to a SM3.0 card, as the features above are required. An example of this can be seen with Far Cry, where SM3.0 (and SM2.0b) support increased performance but offered no quality advantage versus 2.0/2.0b.
In fact, the only current quality advantage is HDR. Unfortunately (as I implied above), this is not the most reasonable thing, as it has a heavy performance hit. Oh, and you can't use anti-alias with it. That tends to be a double-downer.

Why is everyone relating this game to Generals? It's a totaly different engine and totally different design. This game will be good, just by looking and reading about it so far, but to be fantastic, well we would just have to wait and see now will we.
Also, is there any reviews out there?
If you wear a selafone suite, people clearly see your nuts.

Both EA games (i know they only publish)
LOTR: BFME 's engine is built on the Generals engine.

i'm hyped, can't wait!
but yes, its inevitably going to be compared to Generals as it uses the same engine.
but c'mon, Generals is pushing 2 years old, so its not *exactly* the same engine anymore, it will be well developed with higher quality textures and such. plus its Lord of the Rings, so theres not going to be a single Generals-like model in the game as tanks would look out of place
Generals was good looking for its time (and still is) so this game certainly looks promising

Just read swedish pcgamer, they gave it 88% which is pretty good I guess.(HL2 got 97%). On the plus side they mention 2 large campains, Strategimap, Nice visuals, the actors and nice GUI. On the minus side they only mention "SuperGandalf"

pc zone gave it 91% and pc gamer gave it 76% in UK.
i dunno why magazines mark games down if they are similar to other games. if its a good game give it a good score no matter if its the same as another game.
i have my reservations for this game but i hope its gonna be good. it'll be one of the few games i'll play this xmas the other will be kotor2.

Are you saying B&W was a Bad game? B&W was an excellent game that had one severe problem: No replayablilty and too Much Mircomanagement. Ok Thats 2 but thats besides the point.
Still, besides that, being a God was quite fun, and I am eagerly awating B&W2 which, if you have checked, has some fundamental Difference (like war).
Anyway, back on topic: I don't feel the Hype for this game (maybe its because of the License, but LOTR never realy clicked with me. And I have read mainly the books, all 3)

Yeah, but PCGamer also gave DeusEx 2 90% so I don't really trust them that much any more.

no matter what points magazines give it all comes down to personal taste.
like a movie, if you read somewhere that a guy said "the movie is shit i would nt go twice to see it" you might love it, so the best thing is to try then buy, or go for your feelings about it
