Are there any stutterers on these forums besides me? Or anyone whos got one in the family or a friend who stutters? Whats your thoughts, do you battle with it everyday or have you come to terms with it?

I've been batteling my stutter all my life, during the teen years it was much much worse than now in my late 20's but im still feeling the effects of those years, not speaking much not learning how adults socialize etc
Im feeling alot better now but still everyday is a battle, some days you win others you lose. But I keep going strong, never letting it get me down completely.

Its been like my worst enemy, an enemy that knows all my secrets and can attack and do damage where it hurts the most. The only weapon I have against it is really not to let it get the best of me and instead of fighting it, rather try and make peace with it.

Thats the stereotypical form of speech impediment, but there are so vastly different forms of stutter. One girl i knew would repeat the same word over and over until she could continue. Another locks all his face and tries to force his way through a word.
Its fascinating to observe how different people develop methods for what to do when locking onto a word or sound.
Remeber that guy from Pearl Harbor who made a strange sound whenever he spoke, thats one form av speech impediment or stutter.

My step brother has had a stutter all his life, he still has it but its not so bad now hes is 40. Although through school and teen life it made him a bit of a social outcast. And that seems to of followed through to later life, only time he really bothers with people is family or his job. Good luck with people because for the most part were all assholes on this earth when it comes to people that are just slightly different. Must be fraking annoying..

In a perfect world that would be the only solution but we dont live in a perfect world, but I've noticed more and more that people arent really bothered by stutterers or to them its not a big deal so its more psychological and a deeply rooted problem, sometimes knowledge isnt enough, you have to unlearn behaved patterns thats been around for years. Remember I've been stuttering all my life and even if I now know its not a really big deal im still nervous everytime I open my mouth.
It takes years of practice and hard work to change stuff like that, but Im glad I've started now rather than never.

Well its not just about getting women, its more to it than that. imagine yourself always being nervous when talking to people, never being able to relax and get that connection with someone.
I get girls no matter what, but to feel confident and relaxed is something I rate higher.

I only stutter when I'm nervous... my mom sent me to psychiatrist and she told me that I had mild depression, so yea that was thats it for me and that 70$ PER 45 minutes

I stutter when I meet people for the first time, they see that you have hard talking to them, next time you feel more comfortable and its getting better

but I don't care if a stutter or not, no one is perfect and everyone is fucked up in their own way

Maybe that's why my so-called high school friends ditched me all the time? but who cares I'm college now and people been pretty cool so far..Some just don't care, some give look WTF??
but its way better then High school kiddies

But I think if I remember correctly, I think I read it or someone told me that stutters usually have 5 more IQ points ;p or something along these lines

Don't think that's something you could prove, but me personally, depending on the context, e.g. Party or something, I'd change 5 to around 40ish... Very Happy

Nope, I dont stutter.

Well, there are occasions when I go to pick up a woman and she's really hot and somewhat intimidating...the first few mins we talk I stutter a bit. Like "Hi, my name is Raine. So um, so, so whats your name?"

But after a few mins, it stops and its not like that with every woman.

It usually happens when there's that one really hot chick in the bar or club and you see guys try to pick her up all nite and get shot down, then you try and your trying to say something so you dont get shot down but also trying to act casual and you dont know exactly what to say so your trying to talk but thinking of what else to say at the same time. I dunno if that would be considering studdering, more like nervousness Smile

But thats a rarity for me. Women rarly make me nervous. Like i said, its only when I see a really a woman who's been shootin down guys left and right then I try to make a move.
And sometimes it works out for the best...they will pick up on it and be like "Are you nervous?" or "do I make you nervous?" and then starts the sweet talking ya know? lol the "im nervous cause your so beautiful and I didnt want to be shot down, I wanna get to know you" etc

I read somewhere that trying to bruteforce your way out of a stutter problem only makes it worse because whatever barrier is causing it only ends up resisting more. It all sounds very zen to me but I do know that you can't win against your own mind. There have been suggestions that a 'softer' approach works better with people claiming different levels of success. But you probably know more about the reality of those claims.

one thing that seems to help is to practice alot different set phrases that work at the beginning of sentences, till they feel comfortable to utter. So when a stutterer feels overwhelmed again, he can use those practiced wordings to get into a sentence without problems.

Yeah thats a nice technique to use. If you force it too much youll lock your face and do one of those ugly grimases you see stutteres do sometime.
To be I stutter when im down or when I feel afraid, nervous or anxious. The paradox of it is that when my self esteem is high I do stutter but not hardly as much and I dont care as much about it. But its hard to build self esteem when you feel down and the stutter itself makes you feel worse.

Some say speech impediemnt is caused by a horrible experience as a child...

I stutter when I am really nervous. I did it more as a kid. One thing I have noticed it that it comes out more after I smoke a joint or drink. I tend to not do to so much around people who I am not comfortable with.

I think waldo is right, it comes from having violent/loud parents.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahha. Oh I lolled.

I have a lil stutter. Intentional stutter. Sometime my brain freezes and i end up repeating the same thing over and over for like couple seconds really really fast. Laughing It's all the physical trauma my head enjoyed when I was a little kid.

It's fun. It just scary
