I mean, you get introduced to the monsters right away, there is no scary-as-hell sequence at the beggining where you only hear the distant-monster-cries/scratching-on-the-walls, getting a few misterious clues from notes...the good horror stuff. Here you barely landed and your team is already under attack.
IMO it would have been better if the game relied more on suspense and uncertain situations rather than an almost all out bloodbath. It may be unpredictible, but most of the time, I'm not even borderline scared. It's a really well done game...just not "horror" enough for me. |
like what ?
shelbridge cradle from Thief 3 or what?
i think that the game is pretty tense , not necesarilly scary , but rather it alert and stuff
pretty good sofar , but if this game aint 'horror' than what is ?
System Shock 2 ?
the resident evil series isnt scary at all , same goes for silent hill , fear and undying

Well since you are not 12 anymore it's really hard to get scared by something that is happening on the screen. But name me one movie for example that would reach the horror level of this game.
I think it is an awesome game among the pile of shit that gets released every day.

I'm finding plenty of moments that startle me or make me jump. It's not creeping me out and I won't have trouble sleeping or nightmares.. but it's better than Doom 3 with the jumping out at you and stuff.
The level that scared me the most in a game was the hotel in Vampire Bloodlines. That thing was creepy as hell.

the resident evil series isnt scary at all , same goes for silent hill , fear and undying | That Thief3 level is a really good example, that place made me really jumpy at the beggining (but lost its magic after the zombies appeared). I also liked in that game when I saw that hooded figure turned to stone while sitting on a chair somewhere. I only noticed it when it was right in front of me and it scared the shit out of me.
Good horror games in my book would be the installments of the Fatal Frame series (or Project Zero, I hate when they use different titles per country ). Those games really keep me on my toes all the time.
But any ways, all I'm saying that this game is far from being a good "horror" game, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad game in general. The gameplay is amazingly fluid and well put together and the challange is just right to keep me playing, not to mention that the different gameplay elements are really well done (vacuum, zero-G, cutting off body parts). I know it's hard to keep up the suspense throughout a whole game, but at least they should have tried to put a little in at the beggining.

The exorcist? Alien?
I can name modern games that have an infinitely more palatable sense of suspense than this game. RE's,Thief,Stalker,Ocean house in VtM:bloodlines,Halflife2 ravenholm,FEAR,Penumbra,System shock 2,Silent hill even bioshock.
Game just doesn't properly create suspense. The aliens are not a real threat and are just obstacles in between you and the next objective. It requires no strategy or thought to get passed them.

This game is a shit-ton more scary then most 'horror' games i've played. HL2's ravenholm wasn't scary at all. The entire time you had those dumb zombies running around everywhere, and they weren't much of a challenge either. Doom 3 was just shock factor, as was Quake 4 and prey.
Definatly doesn't top Penumbra though. Both Penumbra games are the scariest games i've ever played. The first one even more so.

Condemned Criminal Origins was much more scary than Penumbra. I consumed 4kg of valium and pooped about 17 pants on my first play through. Iam still under psychological observation.
btw rld release its currently on usenet in case you missed it.
But yes, Dead Space isnt very scary, too predictable but overall an awesome game.

only the first 2 levels are quite scary , the scariest thing is that when u get close to alooking dead monster but actually he is alive and then he just jumps in front of u

Pfff... that's a cliche....
I too find this game not scary enough. Didn't even had one "serious" hump. Just a small ones and that was at the begining. Later on, you get used to things to come. It's still is a really good game, but it's not horror for me.

does anyone have choppy sound!
It starts from the beginning in the menu!
I've tried with sound hardware acceleretion to BASIC/None etc.!
Everything i do doesn't seem to work!
Sometimes the sound is good, but after a few seconds it starts to be choppy/annoying and can't understand nothing that goes around !
The game runs smooth on all max (only resolution is 1024)!
I found something on google:
http://forums.techguy.org/games/761744-dead-space-sound-issues-pc.html
but none of that doesn't seem to work!
Does anyone know how to FIX this dudes?!
At least give some ideas what to try, cause i've run out of them!
Cheers!
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

You can experience skipping sound if your hardware isn't powerful enough.

I did have a vast imagination, when I was a kid......
After watching a horror movie, I was wary of every shadow, had to keep my eyes open to make sure that spiders aren't crawling out of the shower head.
But, seriously, how the f can you get scared of this shit. Don't get me wrong, this game gives you a "thrill", has a few jumpy moments (akin to if you are busy doing something, and someone sneaks up on you and yells, you get startled).
But get scared?, common....

Depends on what you mean by "scared"... If you get really scared, enough to not be able to sleep there's probably something else going on (psychologically), but a really good horror themed game (I'm speaking generally here, not about Dead Space since I don't play it) like for instance System Shock 2, can create a certain uneasy tension and atmosphere the first time you play it. That's the mark of a GOOD game. Unfortunately most games take the easy way by stuffing the game full of silly "bo!!" situations (Doom3 anyone?) that may give you speed burns in your underwear but not much else.
Games with a story and atmosphere that strong are rare. The first time in the underground of Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl really freaked me out. I had to play that level in short bits, and when the controller at the end of that level showed up my gut was tight as a drum.
Oh, FEAR did have some relatively scary moments with Alma, taken straight from jap horror.

scared as in "tense" not feeling fucking fear hahah. Being immersed into the presented environment is a hallmark of a well constructed game. Penumbra and Stalker being the most recent example of a game that does this extremely well.
Dead Space is a well developed and produced game. It just lacks in its ability to create a suspenseful environment. You don't know or care about any of the characters. And after the first hour of the game the encounters are tedious not suspenseful. You have a vast array of ammo and weapons so it nullifies any sort of strategy you generally have to employ in the survival horror genre.
There is no sense of frantic actions you can just sit still and destroy all comers with ease. Ammo is so plentiful you can blast away till your hearts content. Character development is nonexistent and the entire story is predictable in the extreme.
Fun game but not a good horror survival game.

I disagree. It's interesting and immersive to me. When you are in space and the sound is muffled to almost silence and things are crawling around, it's really awesome.

Sound is a huge part of this game.
Having a decent sound card + 5.1 speaker setup will give you a immensely more immersive experience then if you were playing on a basic sound setup.

Sadly the game recycles sound cues to such a degree after the first hour they also become monotonous.
