Hi!
I've got this:
Seagate 160 GB Barracuda 7200.7 ST3160827AS 8MB Cache Serial ATA
I got a question about noise that it makes.
When it just spins (not reading/writing) it's unhearable,
but when it starts reading (or writing) it sounds like my old IBM DeskStar 30GB 5400rpm, or even louder :/ (remember hdds from 486 era comps? - thats something similar, like "traratartatatratatratata" )
I have found same info that it's caused by bad transport of hdd, and I should sent it back.
So the question is: if someone have similar hdd - is his drive noiseless or not??

I just bought a ST3200822AS, it's the 200Gb model. Hard to tell how loud it is, but is definatly louder than my WD1200JB. But it's not always that loud, only if i open a *.rar e.g. I also have another problem with the drive, sometimes when i open someting with winrar, winrar just hangs after ~3 percent and windows is dismounting the drive so i have to reboot. Not sure though if it has something to do with the drive or the interface.
Did you test the drive with the seagate tool? I did that and heard no noise from the drive at all, so your drive should be quite during sector testing too.
Edit:
Btw i am using HDD Health now to monitor both of my drives. The program predicts that the seagate hd will last till march next year, lol, quite long, i just have it for three weeks . You can get it here, it monitors the smart status of hard disks.

Yes, I used it and tested the hdd, there was no bad sectors hopefully...
But i can't remember if it was loud then or not.
