I wanted to say Far Cry at the first moment, but then these monsters came back to my mind. Those were really annoying and ruined the game somewhat for me. They should have scripted a story without them. So it's hard to tell wich game is the best for me this year, i played GTA SA at a friends house and that's really great, i vote for this even if it's not out for pc yet.
Oh and one thing is certain for me. The greatest pos this year was doom3, this got boring after a few hours, i never finished it, in fact i enjoyed deer hunter 2005 more than this over-hyped crap.

Far cry.... It was the first game to really wow me in a long time, with its immersive maps, graphics and rag doll physics.
It stole a lot of HL2 and Doom3's touted next gen graphical thunder imo...

I'm leaning towards Half Life 2 for best shooter just on the sheer coolness of Dog. Especially when he beats the crap out of the tank thing and throws it into the building. I nearly shat my pants. Scripted yes, but scripted events aren't necessarily bad, it helps the game become somewhat like a movie that you can control. I also loved the part where you get to play with the gravity gun for the first time and play fetch with Dog Smile

Biggest disappointment was Doom 3 for me, the graphics were top notch and they got the scare factor perfectly but it got old really quickly for me.
