So, a friend of mine wants to buy a new pc. He needs integrated graphic subsystem with hdmi output and hd audio of course. And onboard wifi Smile

We've been looking at asus mainboards mostly, but we got kinda lost, we need some humping help.

Maybe media desktop pc ?

what do you need it for? watch HD movies, games?

for a media PC the trick is to make it quiet. Most movies HD or otherwise do not require masses of CPU and Graffics Card power, any dual core CPU and a 6600GT or above GFX will play any movies without a hitch. Most inbuilt GFX are a no no/ they generally aren't powerful enough for games or movies. you can get a DVI to HDMI convertor with no loss of power and some GFX cards come with a built in connector to drop the sound onto the HDMI line too. checkout Scan or Aria in the uk and quietPC for any silent solutions. for a case to wow I recomment the OrigenAE ones, I have the SV14 in black for my VISTA HTPC, simply awesomeness.

I guess you've been looking at something like this (no built in wifi though)?
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/asus_p5e_vm_hdmi/
http://ca.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=584&l4=0&model=1912&modelmenu=1

avs forum also recommends having at least E6600 to playback x264 with the onboard gfx card...
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14489763

one thing I noticed in reviews is that they say sweet fuck all about HD audio...

another possibility is to wait until the GeForce 8300 mGPU chipset is used on a motherboard that supports HD audio ... it at least has a built in PureVideo decoder...
http://apcmag.com/asus_m3nhhdmi.htm
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=2181&l1=3&l2=149&l3=676&l4=0

I guess we're not quite there yet in terms of all-in-one HTPC motherboards ...

why do you want it built in. GFX cards are cheap as chips (no pun) at the moment

Im out of town, that's why I took some tme to reply, sorry. Thanx for the recommendations !

We're looking for a mainboard that has :

1) Support for the latest intel socket (775 I believe?)
2) integrated graphics chipset with HDMI and VGA output, preferrably with some modest
graphics capabilities (half life 2 for example)
3) integrated HD audio, network

We were looking at asus mainboards with the nvidia 790gx chipset that has the hd 3300 igp, but it only supports amd cpus and the phenoms are made of the famous phail-62 material Mad

So confusing ... maybe a normal gfx card with hdmi output would be better ?

More recommendations plz ? Smile

why not get regular cheap mobo with some cheap fanless video card, it will be cheaper than getting mobo with hdmi, plus i'd never rely on integrated video [except laptop] and i doubt u will be able to play hl2 on it
u can always get dvi2hdmi cable

any new mobo has decent internal HD sound

this

and this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121230

will do just fine

and it will fit in any htpc case

^^ I agree with mortibus ... what you want (all in one motherboard) doesn't really exist yet...

yeah, I linked to that in the first post. The problem is reviewers can't seem to figure out this is not a gaming mb and actually comment on its use in a HTPC... not even a mention of HD audio in most any review I can even find.

don't all last asus mobos have hd audio
i mean i got this old p5b and it has it

i wonder tho why would anyone would be looking for some specific chipset with specific integrated video when it's just for htpc Confused
it doesn't really matter, then again saying u need htpc but u need it to handle certain games??
htpc means Home Theater PC aka for watching movies not playing video games, a bit confusing really
maybe VGAdeadcafe doesn't know meaning of htpc Razz

from what I can read, only HDMI v1.3 can actually output dolby trueHD/dts-ma without being downsampled ...
