Just a plain old game that lets you go where you want, and do what you want without any pressing concern to do the main plot right away.

Try a MMO such as WoW or Eve Online. There is no main plot to be done.

The whole Eve universe is run by players, including economy, security, etc. You can be a fighter, PvPer, tradesman, pirate, miner, crafter, anything.

WoW is all about combat, PvP and PvE.

The disadvantage of MMO is that you really need a good group of friends to really enjoy the full content of the game.

I got Mount & Blade already, I've had it since .808. I'm waiting for the mods to be updated to the latest version before I give it another go. You can only play vanilla so much before it starts to get pretty tedious.

its on 1.003 FINAL now with a great GFX mod available.

Not true freeform in that you cant travel to different parts of the game world, but Deus Ex lets you takle problems in your own way. Like if you want to enter a building there are different ways you can acomplish this depending if you prefer stealth, action or a combination of those.
Its truly the most realistically desgined game based on this principle. Everything has been set up with logic and reliasm. Like a computer can be hacked if you have proper hacking skills no matter if its important or not.
Definetly check it out, its one of the greatest games ever!

Yeah, Deus Ex was a pretty kick ass game. I wasn't all that impressed with the second though.

Trying to stay away from MMOs for now. I've played most at one point or another. EVE was decent but the waiting on skills was a bit too annoying for me.

I looked up that Second Life game but all I could find was something about a virtual world game like Project Entropia. I can't say I saw the point of those games, pretty weird.

Hmm. Never heard of it. I'll have to google it.

The things I really miss about MMOs or any game I guess, is a decent crafting system. SWG Pre-CU had one of the best crafting systems in any game, bar none. It was fantastic, I loved the shit out of that game. I wish another MMO had a decent crafting system. Sad

Edit: I'm not a graphics whore, but an ASCII game? Holy fuck that's ass backwards in this day and age. heh.

Gameplay more than makes up for the ASCII graphics. It just takes a bit of getting used to. You can pretty much do anything in the game. Just earlier I had some glassmaker go into a fey mood and demanded materials that I didn't have to make something. When this happens, they usually go berserk and go on a rampage. I just locked the door to her workshop, then flooded her room with water till she drowned to death.

Too bad it also caused her husband to get depressed and was picking fights with everyone until another dwarf knocked him unconscious...

I'll jump on the Guild Wars bandwagon. Great game and you can get the bundle (3 different continents and a add-on) for like 50$.

2000 hours+ worth of gameplay if you want to do everything. 100h+ just for the main quests Smile
Plus it's hard to find more balanced PvP anywhere if you like to kick some human ass (most likely your ass is the one being kicked bc of the steep learning curve of the PvP)
