OK, so I've been using torrents for downloading HDrips recently as it seems many of the decent non-scene releases aren't making it to usenet.
But here is my problem.
Whenever I'm downloading using a torrent, my internet speed drops to shit. Like web-browsing is VERY slow and usenet downloads slow to a crawl. The thing is, the torrent is only downloading between 50-150 kbps and uploading no more than 50 kbps. If I exit uTorrent, everything immediately returns to normal.
Also, when I leave it on for a long period of time, the fucking internet stops working all together and I get that little warning flag on my network icon about having limited network connectivity (which also kills my VOIP phone). I can just unplug my cable modem and plug it back in and everything works again.
So wtf? Any ideas? If it matters I am using a wired network adapter (built into my nforce4 mb), no router just cable modem --> VOIP terminal --> computer ... windows XP SP2, and cable internet through a third party using the monopoly's lines.
Is this a problem on my end, or perhaps the motherfucking ISP is throttling/disconnecting me?

there's some tools to check if the isp is throttling
i think there's one by google even
your network also slows down if you're making excessive amounts of connections
if you have 10 downloads with 100 connections for each, that's 1000 connections already
try lower the limits and/or number of simultaneous downloads
oh, and XP's tcpip.sys is hard-limiting the connections aswell
you should crack that if you haven't already

OK, will check when I get home ... although I never have more than 1-2 downloads and 1-2 other things seeding until my ratio is ~1.0 or so. There's not many connections either as the site I'm using isn't all that busy.

yeah I'm using 1.8 but I had the same issue with 1.6
actually I noticed, doesn't look like my ports are forwarded correctly. Do I need to do this in the cable modem or the voice terminal?

I had something similar to your second problem before I formatted my computer. Whenever I was running uTorrent, or any other torrent-application, my internet would shut down on me for some 20 seconds before coming back online again. The disconnects were very random, could happen every other minute or be fine for 45 minutes.
Clearly not the same problem that you had, but does anyone know why this might have stopped since I formatted my hdd?

I believe it's slow because you're downloading and uploading ( seeding ) at the same time
drop the upload speed to like 3 but make sure your torrent client doesn't automaticly drop the download speed with it too

well set his upload speed to 3kb and let download speed to unlimited/0
because uploading tend to slow the internet browsing a lot more than downloading ( unless you have a 100mb connection )

if u lower upLd speed that much considering your max upL is 100 kb/s and someone is superseeding expect same dLd speed
as long as your upLd does not exceed 90% of it's maximum your dLd should be at max

You need minimum 6 upload un utorrent or it will cap your download rate to dialup speeds.
About the tcpip.sys hacking, if you're using Vista SP1 (either 32 or 64 bits), every time you boot, you'll have to click F8 and select Disable Driver Signing. There are stupid ways around it (like a half-working pos tool that does that process for you), but IMO it is much better to patch tcpip.sys and do the extra steps to boot, as opposed to staying with such a low amount of connections. I think I have my tcpip.sys set to 50000 connections, if not more.

but I've never bothered with this port forwarding business ... again, do I need to do it for just the cable modem or the voice terminal as well?
btw, I've been working on Mongol for like 2 weeks now on and off ... :/ |
Nouse, I suspect it's the HD site you're using. It took me to download Mongol-Esir from that site 4 days. I think that some of the uploaders there are just slow.

as others have said, just keep it at between 80 and 90% of your max upload-speed, and you should be fine
