MOHPA for me. The AI in MOHPA is just so much more realistic in the way they act then in half life 2. The game just seemed much more real.

linear i agree but to have a gripping story in a game some form of line is needed that the game has to follow, and i think that line in HL2 is very flexible. Every hour you play HL2 you get to see something completley new, i´ve never experienced such a thing in any type of shooter and not in FC. That is why i think FC is inferior by large steps compared to HL2, but yeah everyone has his own way of thinking, and i respect your opinion, my 2 cents. |
And even HL2 had its repetetive moments, making the game appear longer than it was.
so in terms of innovation and being the first and all i'd go with Far Cry for GOTY. |

sorry to butt in but this is way too easy....how about the whole level filled with none other but...headcrabs?? yeah the one where it was so cool in the e3 demo because there were soldiers attacking, but i guess when ppl found out everything was scripted and the ai sucked ass, they replaced every single enemy in the level with a varition of headcrabs. also how about the level where you are jumping from one board to another board to avoid those annoying bugs? dont see whats so revolutionary about jumping puzzles.. and i found myself getting Very tired of both the boat and the buggy levels by the end of them. but anyways could go on and on.
anyways my pick for goty is Vampire the masquerade:bloodlines.
played it through as a malkavian and now doing it all over again as a gangrel. just an awesome rpg, with an awesome engine(yeah so hl2 was good for something).

My picks would be Call of Duty : United Offensive and Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. Although I havent finished them, they're still better than most of the games released this year.

There have been a lot of great games this year, but the fact the HL2 is the latest game, except for BFME, has a great deal to say.
Atleast I think that HL2 will get a lot of votes, just for that reason.

I cannot believe people nominate HL2. Its one of the most lineair, scripted and boring games I've ever played. And it doesn't give something new to the FPSgenre, maybe the engine but not the game. Its just a average game, keep your eyes open.
If some game deserves to be GOTY its Rome Total War. It renewes the Strategy genre and it is an amazing game.

although I agree totally with you, unfortunately, HL2 will be GOTY 2004 by every half assed gaming publication b/c of the hype and hysteria created from this release. RTW while it deserves GOTY, is a RTS and rarely if ever will an RTS take out GOTY. sad really

But in the way the 2015/Infinity Ward team does it, its much better than Half-life 2. The best scripting though goes to Half-Life 1. Come on, the marines were so much better scripted than every single enemy in HL2. If a marine would take it up against 3 combines, he would certainly win.

WoW is not the best MMORPG ever, why? The game is basically everquest but warcraft. It brings nothing new to the MMO game scene gameplay wise. And the developers for WoW even stated that in a dev chat session. As for graphics in WoW, give me a fucking break. SWG or even Planetside or even EVE Online have better graphics then WoW. I bet you didnt know this, but the game does actually use the warcraft 3 engine, and there really is nothing special to the games graphics at all. It has bland over cartoony textures, and models which look like a D3D 7.0 game. Get over the hype, it isnt as good as you want it to be. Take a gander at a screenshot from SWG (which sucks also BTW, I played it for 6 months, I know) and a screenshot from WoW. The WoW screenshot makes you want to vomit at the level of regression there. WoW diserves shit. While I played WoW for almost 3 months during closed beta, I realised that, and have not played it since. WoW was good for one thing I guess though, it got me 150 dollars for selling my closed beta account.
You want a good MMO game, you should try city of heroes, or EVE Online, or wait for www.imperatoronline.com to come out. All other MMO games out there at the moment besides the three that I just mentioned, are either:
A.) Buggy Shit
B.) Stupid Gameplay
C.) Just Plain Stupid

I would agree with the comment that Soldner is the biggest dissapointment. I remember how cool that game looked in the previews, then when it came out, it was crap.

pop2 doesnt deserve GOTY. im glad all you COD bumfuckers haven't spoke up yet., you've finally realised a bit of quality(or lack of it). i think people are just hating on hl2 for the wrong reasons and are nit picking. WoW doesnt deserve GOTY because this "craze" will be over in a few months when people have to start payin it will die out bit by bit. i personally think city of heroes was a better mmorpg but thats just me.
best shooter: Half life 2
best rpg: Sacred. vamp didnt keep me entertained long enough to sit through all the cut scenes.
best rts: warhammer 40k or R:TW close call. maybe R:TW because it had amazing graphics and very tacticle and warhammer was just startcraft 2.5 (still great though)
best racing: Toca race driver 2. Flatout was annoying and didnt bring anything new really besides the mini games and annpying as fuck through-the-windshield-crash-effects
best online game: Cs 1.6 other than that erm... cant really say a good online game this year that really kept me entertained. maybe UT2k4 because i was playin friends. UO didnt do much/anything for me.
best sports: Pro evolution soccer 4 <-- of course
best "other" games: Gish because it was completly new whereas ballance is a remake of marble madness and was pretty short.

Aside from a few annoyances, xbox version of Pop2 is great fun. It's nice to use braincells, albeit a few in games nowadays. Seems so rare :\ Still, the visual improvements the PC version will offer will greatly enhance an already great game.
Half Life 2 as already said will be GOTY thanks to it's undeserved rave reviews. Flame the game all you want, FarCry is still the best all round fps in my eyes on the PC.

You're an ignorant cock if you think WoW runs on the same engine as Warcraft 3. Just because the overall graphical theme is similar, it doesn't make it the same engine.
Let's see, Eve Online doesn't even need much graphics to run, no different than 500 other space-sims out there. City of Heroes? Give me a break, the hype around that game died down 2 weeks after release. It was like playing a single player game online. Only thing it had going for it was the character customization and that lasted for all of 30 minutes for shits and giggles.

Half-Life 2 HANDS DOWN
1.) For all of you who claim Half-Life 2 has no story, you clearly haven't been paying attention: http://members.shaw.ca/storage_4/hl2story/ I might not have picked up on every single detail, but much of this was pretty clear in the game, and I found it to be an interesting story line...
2.) For those of you attacking the linearity of Half-Life 2: Every single single player FPS game ever made has been linear, with the exception of team games like the single player parts of Battlefield and Unreal Tournament ETC ETC, and even THESE are linear in the sense that you can only win in predefined ways. In everything else, there will always be a set path, albeit their might be a second path, or a path might be wider, there will ALWAYS be a path from START to FINISH, so telling me this game is bad because it's too linear is like saying a racing game sucks because it has cars in it. Please think before you post.
3.) The graphics in HL2 while unassuming, are easily the most realistic to date. Yes, You could argue that Doom 3 is prettier with it's multitudes of polygons, but it is no where NEAR as real looking as Half-Life 2, from the realistic people, who don't look like cartoons as much as they do in Doom 3, to the lip synching, which adds more than you would expect to the realism, and finally the physics engine, which in my mind is probably the biggest thing to hit the First Person Genre since doom introduced the idea of being able to aim Up and Down in addition to left and right... Yes, other games incorporate partial physics, like giving dead bodies a little rag doll effect, or letting you blow up walls... But this is the real deal. All the objects in the game can be affected by physics, this opens new doors in terms of puzzles (who wants to run around looking for "keys" when you can solve interesting puzzles like those in HL2... Oh wait, mentally handicapped people don't! TOO BAD), using neutral items as weapons, and so on... I have a feeling that some of the mods for this game are going to be pretty amazing...
4.) For those of you claiming it's too short, please point me to an FPS that's much longer. I think it provides plenty of gaming before you get the the online goodies... Unless you played it all day every day after it came out
5.) Half-Life 2 isn't just a single player game. Last time I checked there was a thing called Counter-Strike, and dozens and dozens of mods are being made now (even one for HL2 DeathMatch which a lot of people have been wanting)
Most of your reasons for claiming that HL2 is not game of the year have either been completely wrong, or extreme nitpicking. There is no way in hell this game should be passed up as GOTY.
Oh, and Rome Total War? Revitalizing the RTS? How bout they give us something new instead of Shogun: Total War set in Rome (Yes I do realize there are some improvements... but ... eh... Maybe this game would be 2. But putting it anywhere near HL2 is just telling people you don't enjoy FPS games, which is perfectly fine, but the better of the two games is obviously HL2)

1: Still the story is cheap, especially the ending, what a anti-climax
2: Far Cry was less lineair then Halflife 2 is.
3: Yes the graphics are nice, but I am not a graphic-whore. I hope games do not become GOTY just because they look good. The engine is great, but not worked out great in the game.
4: I finished it in 2 days and still want my money back. If it wasn't for Day of Defeat source and other mods I already would have gone back to the store.
5: Not everyone likes Counter-Strike. And the mods will take a long time to complete.
Definitly not worthy of the GOTY title. What I especially missed was that Halflife-feeling. Now it felt like a Arnold Schwarzenegger movie without a serious plot. We have enough of that games.
If we compare Rome to Shogun or Medieval, it is a huge, HUGE step forwarts. Even compared to Generals or something like that it is something completely different. It is new and I still play it, unlike Halflife 2. Halflife2 is one of the most overrated games and because magazines were hyping it they had to give it a 9 or higher. Bullshit.
Halflife 2 is not a bad game, don't get me wrong, but really not worthy of GOTY title.
