Half Life 2 CD2DVD
Create a Temp folder on harddrive. Name this folder ‘HL2_DVD’ (without the ‘’) This will be the Label of our DVD.
Copy all contents of CD1 to this Temp folder.
From CD2 copy just two files! The ‘cab’ file (hl2.CAB) and the ‘installer.dll’ file to the main directory of the Temp folder.
From CD3 copy the ‘hl23.CAB’ file to the main directory of the Temp folder.
From CD4 copy the ‘hl24.CAB’ file to the main directory of the Temp folder.
From CD5 copy the ‘hl25.CAB’ file to the main directory of the Temp folder.
Also from CD5 copy the DirectX and VENGEANCE folder to the main directory of the Temp folder.
Now download and install ‘Orca’ (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=105dfc41-801e-4441-aa75-7696d794f109&DisplayLang=en). Once Orca is installed go to the Temp folder and right click the file ‘hl2.msi’ and from near the top of the menu choose ‘Edit with Orca’. (You may have to edit the properties of this file to make it read only, but as it is copied to the harddrive it is probably already edited automatically)
When opened you will see 2 window panes, go to the ‘Tables’ one on the left and scroll down to ‘Media’
Click on ‘Media’ this will show you the entries in the Right pane. There will be 6 columns.
Change all the entries in the ‘VolumeLabel’ column to HL2_DVD
Then ‘Save’ it. (You can also use a program called ‘Masai Editor’ instead of ‘Orca’)
Now burn to a DVD using Nero using the Label HL2_DVD.

Thanks for the info for creating a DVD image.
I have one question: does the Vengeance release have bot support in CS:S?

Quote: | As was already mentioned, you do NOT need a Steam account. Just install it as usual, letting it install Steam then the game. Then start Steam up, it'll do its update thing then ask you to register an account or log in to an existing account - close Steam down at that point then run hl2install.exe. Simple. I've tried that exact prodeedure on a system that's never even seen Steam before and it works great. It's a bit unfortunate that you need to let Steam update, but it's no problem, only takes a few seconds.
One thing I have yet to try though - I've heard that the game (the retail, not VNG's release) sometimes doesn't install properly if you choose not to install CS Source. Being as CS Source in the VNG release will be unplayable, has anyone installed the game while leaving CS Source unticked? I could try it myself but I'm too lazy to reinstall it I just deleted the two CS Source files afterwards, saves roughly a gig of space. |
how will You explain this:
Code: | *OFFLINE INSTALLER NOTES*
This is ONLY for people who did NOT have their internet connection
active during the installation of Half-Life 2 and Steam.
If you DID have your internet connection active while installing
Half-Life_2_Retail-VENGEANCE, which includes STEAM and the game itself,
then you can ignore this release.
Extract the files to anywhere on your HDD, and run hl2install.exe.
Presto! :)
Run the game from the desktop shortcut! (and only the desktop shortcut) | ?

Off-line installer didn't work for me
And I wonder how long the online install will work.
I can't imagine Valve won't do anything about it.

It wouldn't let me change the install location when installing it so it went to x:/program files/valve/steam/steamapps Does this matter that this is my my main steam folder or is there a way i can change where it gets installed to??
Gamesmaster isn't just a name!
It's a statement!!!

Offline "hl2install" seem fucked for some including me.
Maybe only the default dir works (c:\program files\valve\steam\)?
As always I used a custom one.

heres what i did and everything works fine.
First i made what canT-sTop said on how to make a DVD but he says to edit it to "read only" but if its read only you cant edit teh files so dont "read only" it.
I start the installation and the game want to go in my steam folder by default and you cant change the directory so all you need to do and rename your Valve folder then teh game will think you dont have STEAM installed.
When its rename the game will start a fresh installation knowing that you dont have STEAM so browse where you want the game install. It will install STEAM first (no need to register and dont put icon on desktop) then he will launch the installation of the game. Do not remove CS Source in the installation and dont put a HL2 icon on desktop.
When the installation is done STEAM will launch to update the game, let it go through then a new window will appear to register on STEAM, close it. Then run Half-Life_2_Retail_Offline_Installer-VENGEANCE and it will crack HL2 and put the proper icon on desktop...then play.
The vengeance installer on CD5 or the new offline one will not work if STEAM HL2 is not updated.

I made a directory G:\HL2 test\ and works fine here
