For a car din the range of the Nvidia FX 5***, the immediate competitiors are the ATI Radeo 9*** Series.

And for those serie, ATI had the upper hand. IF you want a card in that range, I suggest you get an ATI, preferably a 9800 pro or XT.

If you insist on getting a NVidia Card, I strongly suggest you switch your choice to a 6600 card. For not that much more money, you get a much much much better card. It, as far as I know, even beats the ATI competitiors (those being the X600 and X700)

On the other hand, if you find yourself wondering wether to get a 6600 GT or normal 6800, get the 6800.

BTW: the ATI X800 serie is pretty much on par with the Nvidia 6800 serie. SO get which ever you get the better price on.

Small summary, in easier to read form:
(prices according to newegg.com)

ATI -=- Nvidia
9800 Pro (278.00) > FX5900XT (185)

ATI X700 no AGP model. < NVIDIA 6600 GT (245)
ATI Radeon X800Pro (399.00$) == Nvidia 6800GT (399.00$)

I personally just bought a 6800GT (waiting delivery) Mine came with Painkiller. The one I got listed comes with Doom3 Razz
Just a little note, the 6800GT is the SAME as a 6800 ULTRA, The only difference is that it's clocked 50mhz slower on the core nd 100mhz slower on the memory. A small and easy overclock gives you a 6800 Ultra, 100 less dollars.

An X800 Pro can also be softmoded to X800 XT, but it is a bit harder and riskier since you have to enable new pipelines. They are there, but some times arent working. So a x800Pro to XT isnt a sure bet(though not far from one), while a 6800GT to Ultra is.

Considering the price you intended to pay, I suggests you either jump to a Nvidia 6600GT (which is FAR superior to a FX5900 or a 9800Pro) or again if your really tigh on your budget, a 9800Pro.

And if the choice is STRICLY between the 2 you noted in your topic's title, I'd go with an evga. I had multiple problems with Asus items before. Never any with a Chaintech though, and they come with a lot more stuff than Asus ones. Personal experience only. Counts for something..
I blacklisted Asus.

But: if the choice is truly between an FX 5900 or a Radeon 9800, CHECK EBAY. lots of people are moving from the Radeon 9### / Nvidia FX series to bigger and better cards, it's a good time for nice deals.

eVGA is an American brand, their cards are not being sold in Europe I think. If you really want a 5950 Ultra I'd take the eVGA. But keep in mind those cards are getting pretty damn hot, are quite loud, and they are not among the fastest anymore....

OK, thanks for clearing that up. If you have the money at least buy a x700 or a 6600/6800gt so the card could be used for future games. Personally I would buy either a x800xt pe or a 6800 ultra extreme.
