you'd be surprised how many fall for stupid schemes like that
case in point, I had someone call my house yesterday doing a "study". On my phone it came up no number, no name.
So I listen to what they wanted. Before they could begin this survey/study, I had to give my full name, SIN number, street address, year of birthday, place of birth etc
I told the guy, if you are trying to run a scam which you obviously are, you should go about it in a more subtle way and hung up.

I know one guy who got a free ipod. It was the scam where you have to get 100's of people to sign up. It took him a month. Either way, most are either completely unachievable or in the end you put in more time then the damn thing is worth.... a lot more. Alternatively, it is completely a scam.

Its a pain but some of these sites offer free xbox Live. I actually did one of these things and now I have 3 months of Xbox Live.

Smart guy. Giving out your SIN card # in Canada is crazy. (US is different) hence the Indenity theif that goes on there.

yeah you have to be pretty clueless to give away that kind of information over the phone.
nobody EVER asks you legitimately for your SIN over the phone when they are the ones who initiated the call (but calling say Revenue Canada about your taxes would require you to tell them your SIN, but they would never call to solicit this information).
Actually sometimes a credit card telemarketer from my bank will call asking if I want to apply, in that case they gave me a choice whether to disclose. But they already have all of the other personal information that goes along with SIN so they don't ever ask for that.

this number is used for more administrative thinks (like employment, income tax, pension etc.) but we have a separate card for health insurance number (SIN comes from federal govt while HIN comes from provincial govt).

I think people get de-sensitive to it. Just a small point.
In the states it is pretty common to pay people on their SIN's . I worked for a company based out the US and that was how they gave out the paychecques. SIN Numbers. They would call out the sin # and you had to come up and take your paycheck. I felt that was wrong and said something but it didn't go anywhere. Later I looked into in and found that some states had peoples SIN's on their driver licence plates.
