A what would you do question.

You're unemployed and have little money. So the jobcentre send you on a PC Engineering course which is compulsory. You enjoy that course so far but you've only been there for two days and have just been doing the obligatory tests such as maths and English assessments and the induction that every business wants you to do.

Now then, you're also a skilled lorry driver and attended an interview for a job the week before the PC Engineering course and was told although you didn't get the job they'll keep your details on record. They then ring today to offer you that job. But the thing is, you don't want to do lorry driving, you don't like it. It doesn't challenge you. But it is a good wage, after all it's as I said a skilled job and it's working with hazardous goods and you have the licence for that.

So what would you guys do, stay on a course that you enjoy, but are on the bones of your arse or take a job that you don't particularly like (but could get used to it) but it pays a decent wage.

The reason I'm asking is because a friend is in this exact situation, I can't advise him as I've never been in this position and I have no insight to it.

take the driving job, save some money until you can spend the time/resources to properly train for and find a job you like.

The choice is quite simple (to me atleast) even more so due to the fact that your friend doesn't want to make driving trucks a career. The only reasoning he could use for taking the driving job would be that he needs the money and (in his mind) it would be a temporary job. The trouble with those kinds of temporary jobs is that they often become permanent. If that happens he will always regret this moment of choice and not having taken the other road. It's not as if he can't become a truck driver ever if he passes up on this job.

True Swingman, but he feels his life is on standstill while he has no money. He wants to move back to where he grew up. I mean it's not far, just to the other side of the city we live in. He can't do that and decorate the next place with no cash. Plus anyones social life is limited living on benefits. I mean you can hardly get a new partner when you have no money. You can't afford to go out.

I suppose this is more complex that it actually looks on the surface.

Really it all boils down to whether you want money now or you want a new career with no guarantee in that field of gaining employment in the future.

What you describe there is the stereotypical reason why kids drop out of school and we know where they end up. Nouse's suggestion sounds very reasonable on the surface but the only reason I'm not in favour is that change is a very difficult thing to effect especially when it comes to self. IF (and that's a bigger if than I can convey with caps) he is the kind of person who can be sure that when things get better he will carry out his original plan, then he should take the job. But I am sure most people stuck in shitty jobs thought (or still think) the same thing when they took those jobs.

That's true, I would hate to be stuck in a dead end job unless I enjoyed that job.
I missed Nouse's post, he posted it at the same time as mine.
He's probably right though.

Don't be a dumb fuck, download CBT Nuggets from usenet, educate yourself on your own time, take the MS exams and find yourself a proper job. So do the redneck lorry shit now, and in your free time study that shit. Noone should do a job he doesn't like, if you do a job do it cuz you like it not cuz it helps you make ends meat. Sure you can do it for a year or two, but once you get stuck in a rut its too fucking late and there's no way back and you'll end up being miserable for the rest of your life.

My 2 cents on the subject....

PS : Usenet account = 17$ a month, take giganews, should be more than enough to download every CBT nugget you need to complete an MCSE or MCSA.
PPS : No offense:LOL:

Believe me Cheese if you knew how complex driving a lorry these days it's not a redneck job.

Besides, it's easier to get a job when you have a job.
But I see where you're coming from.

No offence taken.

Very Happy

Yeah I noticed that too a few years back when I was on the dole, noone wanted me, right after I had several jobs and didn't have to look, they just called me up and started begging for me:LOL: And in my eyes driving a lorry is a redneck job, why, cuz it involves insane hours, you literally have no social life, its a pretty deadend job, its lonely and it just plain sucks. But thats my opinion on the matter, if you have kids or something they will pay the heavy fine of never seeing their dad or mom.

The course may not lead to a job for definite. For definite a job will lead to you being able to a course.

Take the job.

You already know what I think but thought i'd put it up here
