3/4 of those pass below my standards
bunch of great ones there though
usually there's two or three games a year that properly pass the bar to get my stamp of approval
i honestly can't remember a single passing game this year (portal was 2007)
(apart from penumbra 2 for the indie bracket, which - as it's price - is on a different scale)
the problem is that even while people do not accept crap and demand quality, the other side is directly interpreting the 'declining sales' as direct piracy
and the 'lowest common denominator' approach has worked so well for tv, so why not games?
it appears to be working well so far, as far as money goes

Typical 'get off my lawn' attitude.
People hate new things. They think something they liked was perfect and anything that isn't the same isn't good.
Games aren't worse, old gamers are just jaded and close minded.
While there are plenty of shit games out there, there always has been. It's just that so many games are made these days that you see shit more often. Then again, what's truly 'shit' isn't nearly as common as what you just don't like so it gets called shit. Some people hate FPSes so any decent FPS is still shit, while people who like them think it's good.

Alright, I'll extend it by one year, 1990-2002, that moves most good games on your list into my part. Other than that, you're mentioning many expansions, and very many 'sequel duplicates' that are way too similar to their predecessors( not to mention that the first game of the series usually came inside of 1990-2002 ).
And the mere fact that you're mentioning games like Doom3, Sims2, Oblivion, WiC, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc. on your list of 'great games', is enough to tell me that our opinion of what is a great game and not differs wildly.

many expansions? I mentioned 2 expansions in that list
very many 'sequel duplicates'? You mean Rome and Medieval 2 and civilization 4? So sequels should never be considered good games just because they're like their predecessors? interesting
Doom 3, Sims 2, Oblivion, WiC, Mass Effect, Bioshock aren't great games?
As far as I know, they were all extremely well received by both critics and gamers and sold incredibly well.
anyway, I didn't even wanna get dragged into a lame war like this, so no more replies here from me. you win. gaming has been dead for 6 years apparently.

NOW do you see why I created my rant!? I didn't do it to be a dick, I did it to illustrate that people these days are hating for the sake of it .. and are completely ignoring games that really are excellent!
However, it seems you won't make many friends around here if you go around saying silly things like "Oblivion and Mass Effect are good games"

Actually I see bitching and moaning every time a game is released.
The problem is these people keep buying the games they don't like. Developers do not give a flying fuck what you think, they only speak in dollars and cents.
Gaming is a passtime, not a fucking life style. If you're not happy with it go the fuck outside.

Only when they're very similar. A list that goes like this just becomes ridiculous:
Championship Manager97/98
Championship Manager98/99
Championship Manager99/00
Championship Manager00/01
Championship Manager01/02,
Championship Manager02/03,
Championship Manager03/04,
Don't you think?

Ah yes, trust today's gaming press, where journalists get fired if they don't give overhyped games a high rating, and trust the mindless masses that are exactly the crowd developers these days are dumping down games for. Great argument there.
Doom3 sucks, Sims2...does any male member of our society play this game? Oblivion, don't even get me started, WiC is utterly unspecial and boring, Mass Effect is the very definition of averageness, Bioshock brings shame to its superb spiritual predecessor System Shock2, etc., etc. Seriously, get some taste.

Your argument autofails. Accept that not everyone is as easily pleased as you, and when you've played games for many years it really does get boring to see the same games created again and again, just in a different shell and more and more dumbed down . Yes, I can't stand many of today's games, but there are also games I do think are great, like Stalker and The Witcher, to name two.

Not true. Like I said, games haven't really matured alongside the generation that has spent their youth playing them. You don't really see people "outgrowing" books or movies, do you?
And the very fact that a lot of people are also complaining about the abundance of sequels and rip-offs kind of contradicts what you're saying.

Like I said about the demographics earlier, a lot of gamers are in their 30's already. Developers should start giving a 'flying fuck' about people think, 'cuz they aren't going to keep on bringing the money in just out of habit for long.
Of course you can take the stance that games should be "fun" and something that you do before you grow up, and then there is no problem. I guess that has it's merits as well...
