imagine having to play assassin's creed without being able to jump and climb
sure, it's still a solid medieval assassin game, but very different - clearly not the same game anymore
any game leaving out jumping severely restricts player movement
not being able to jump on top of a car wreck to reach a low rooftop for a comfortable sniping position for example
or being stuck in a corner because a trash can fell over and you can't climb over it, forcing you to reload an earlier game |
Assassin's creed is a game thats based on such actions so of course with out it it would fail to be the same game. Taking that out of the game would be like taking stealth out of Metal Gear series. My comment was never intended to say games like Assassin's creed don't need it. Also your trashcan example is usually caused by poor planning from the developers which caused such a action to be possible.
madmax17 wrote: | Mass effect is a silly example it's not an open world like Oblivion which had jumping by the way and swimming, free exploration implicits that there is jumping in the game otherwise what kind of exploration is it, anyway there is only one city and not a very big one so maybe they are giving us a hint that this is more of a 'cramped' game than an 'explorable' one, the trailers looked cramped to me blocked by buildings and obstacles if you had a jump button you could jump over some of them but no go, looks more and more 'consoly' to me, man this game is gonna suck bad. |
The reason why I used Mass Effect as a example is because vurt pointed out as a flaw in biowares games. None of biowares games ever require such actions and would never really be useful.

hahaha, a whole half hour and he thinks he knows everything about the game, jumping to (negative) conclusions all the time, what an idiot.

It wouldn't be the 1st time that general opinion of mainstream/well-known review sites provide sugar-coated impressions on previews (or at the very least, not picky enough), that eventually turns into a backlash when the game is actually released.
Could mention the whole US PC Gamer - Doom 3 debacle, but even TES: Oblivion is a good example:
What percentage of "prime" sites and magazines that released a pre/review of the game before it was widely available for the public, gave hard -but entirely valid- criticism on points such as:
-The whole leveling issue.
-Bad animations, specially in your own character.
-Bad AI in general
-Ill conceived UI for the PC version
-Shallow dialogues
-Repetitive scenarios, specially inside the portals.
-Always been caught stealing, even if there was no-one around.
and so?
Something that -you would think-, were easily noticeable after a few minutes of playing.
Had it been the case, there wouldn't be that many 95 to 100 scores.
You could however, read bits about those issues in small sites and blogs of "common" people that were allowed to play the demos beforehand.

rofl it has the same dungeons as Oblivion that's just lazy, the map is what worries me I think it's a lot smaller than Oblivion which was not big.
rofl n2 it seems like the atmosphere will be the same like from that movie 'I am legend', no people to meet only zombies, yes he only played for 30 minutes but Bethseda confirmed it, number of npc's will be very, very, small because hey, it was a nuclear holocaust after all and people at Bethseda are very lazy so it's a perfect setting for them.
It seems that level scaling is back in even tough Bethseda said it was out, that's just great, I will have to wait for OOO for F3 in order to play this crap.
Anyone still hoping this game will be good? The E3 videos said it all this only confirms it.

Yes, actually we are all hoping it will be good, yourself included, I'm sure. If you meant "thinking" if it will be good, well... that's another story.
Semantics, I know.
And to answer now. That french article kinda confirmed what I thought I noticed in the videos making me a bit worried. On the other hand we're only talking about a hacked pre-character that is allowed to roam around only 30 minutes. This surely can't be enough to judge a game on it's entire scale.
IMHO one thing is certain though: everything will be simplified (some might read "dumbed down") due to console market and it's limited controls. One perfect example is the new Pipboy. In ex-Fallaout(s) we had:
1. Character screen (with all the stats, perks and skills visible with a very moody and incredible artwork "in color")
2. Inventory (with the abilty to browse and equip items in BOTH hands - kinda sucky but eventually one will love it because THIS IS FALLOUT)
3. The PipBoy itself (with quests, resting options, map, time and date, videos - moody, great artwork, original)
4. The Skilldex (default key S) with skills one will use in realtime (almost 30% of the screen menu)
Well... I wish I didn't make that list now. Bummer...
/sigh

| No it can't but I have enough experience with games to know that when a game is this close to a release, meaning a few months, there isn't enough time to change basically anything important it's all about testing and polishing and checking and fixing small bugs, this is how the game will look like and how the gameplay will feel so I kinda lost my optimism I had before E3.
Also bear in mind that developers usually present the best and most attractive features of the game at E3 because it is like a commercial in the end, you are trying to sell your product and you get people interested with videos and presentation, so what gets me worried is that they actually think that what they presented is good and attractive "press the right bumper with your left testicle, get ready to cum because a feast of gore and blood spurting in the air will soon commence" which consequently leaves me thinking that the rest of the game will follow the same pattern if not even decline in quality because if this is supposed to be something we should all get excited about I wonder how the rest of the game will look like, maybe walking around generic dungeons killing rats on some stupid quest to retrieve a radio that fell down the sewer with crappy lightning and washed out textures and rats that are hard to kill because they level up with you, I just have a gut felling this one will win the "disappointment of the year" award.

The reviewer clearly states at multiple times that he only played for 30 minutes and so his review might not be that accurate, but reading he things he writes about seem very plausable and the game seems to be oblivion set in the fallout universe.
Cant understand why bethesda didnt take a look at what was so fucked with oblivion and try to fix it for f3.
And the dreaded dungeon with all the uber rats not detected by the turret was almost painful to read.
Another great game fucked by commersial powers and dumbing down for the console kiddies. Cant for the life of me understand wy any sane person would play an fsp with a game controller.
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!

Yep any PC game that requires something called brain and effort got ported to the consoles and dramaticly dumbed down and lost all its appeal
Ghost recon , splinter cell , Fallout ..etc

Wasnt refering to the controls as much as the "dumbing down". It doesn't sound like Fallout any more... AT ALL.
Just like the fucked Deus Ex.
Turning something great into a steaming pile of poop.
And 3rd person doesnt matter much... they control the same. i can still do much better with a keyboard and mouse regardless of the view.

Did anyone notice a plot-hole and the game isn't even out yet? In all the e3 videos the guy starts by saying "you just left the vault, a place that nobody ever enters and nobody ever leaves" but in the story you leave in search of your father who left that same vault and didn't come back so he left. Is this a brothel where people come and go every day or a vault Jesus Christ.

He's just a poor presenter - should've said "No one ever enters and no one ever leaves; until now. You go after your father... etc etc."

This is the worst bashing yet, looks bleak for F3.

I wonder if Bethesda paid enough attention to Fallout storyline to actually implement where the Fallout series was really going. I believe the real goal in the past Fallout games weren't just to do the main quest but to rather understand how the world got to the way it currently is.
The Fallout series greatly hinted that AI could have been the sole reason why the wars started in the first place that manipulated man into destroying itself. Also that this could be the very reason for the vaults and their strange experiments on people such as why some opened early and why some didn't get the things they needed. One even had only males. The AI basically got bored of common life and just like humans were able to develop not so nice mental capabilities. It was all entertainment to them and one could assume they secretly were able to monitor and manipulate the vaults and is no doubt responseable for the Enclave who are puppets and don't even know it.
I believe that Black Isle was leading down this road and would sooner or later pit the player against the very AI programs that caused the world to be a wasteland and continue to wreak havoc even after. Maybe there actually was a happy ending planned for the Fallout universe that we may never get to see.

"Lady Killer gives you extra damage against female enemies, and "unique dialogue options" when talking to female NPCs. Sorry, Bethesda, that's not satirical, it's just crass and misogynistic."
it's like they are trying desperately to copy whatever made the previous Fallout so popular with the black humor and atmosphere but are failing miserably for some reason, this is just tasteless.
