Metal is generally one of my favorites musical genres, imo is one of the more complete musical genres, most people who like metal, like it because they just want to listen to "the most brutal music in the world", for me that's not metal, that's just empty minded kids wanting to be bad, first of all, technically speaking, metal is the closest descent of classical and orchestral music, second, what drives me to enjoy metal so very much is the feeling of empowerment that metal transmits, and most good quality metal bands, despite of it's subgenre have the ability to produce what I call multi-layer musics, and also, another thing that I believe to be wrong when judging metal music is that, imo, metal is not about the lyrics, but the several layers of melodic music on the background.
90% of the commercial music of the present day is crap, and yes, this also applies to metal, but of all the musical that currently have mass commercial production, metal is one of the few that has more decent musical truthfulness.
lol, you hit the nail on teh head, I hate a lot of crap that's out today. The only bands from the states I'll listen to is Fear Factory, Killswitch Engage and Chimaira really, and of course old school metal bands etc like Iron Maiden and what not. I find a lot of bands from other countries seem to be more about the music than the money. You can hear a great deal of difference in the effort put into the song.
this lot might be too loud for you though if you're a Killswitch fan, I dunno. I love it anyway and i'm not really a Metal fan. Metal from Finland is always pure.

Metal is humans gift to satan. It´s suposed to be brutal.
A good lyric helps to bring out the song in it´s right light.
Asteroth!
J/k, seriously though as Rohrin mentions, as a genre it contains alot of depth to satisfy alot of people, ranging from a little boy scout in Aspen to a 200kg church burner in Bergen.
Fun thing happened to me awhile ago. A guy claimed to be a pro at metal and wanted to do a name dropping competition with me. He named some bands of which I had no idea of who they were. I asked him what the hell kind of genre is that? Oh, he said, it´s metal core. What the fuck, I replied, that is not metal! Metal is Bathory, Celtic Frost, Sodom, Kreator, and so on. Of these bands he had heard none.
Either I´m getting old and metal stands for something completely different today, or the guy was on crack.
i'll be fine with my collection, actually i could do without downloading for years and never worry about missing something quality.. let me take that back, new Bloodbath out in a few weeks.
fuck new scene and all it encompasses, all the core's and all the GRRR im angry ROAR but i have a sweet side when the verse kicks in, and my guitarist will harmonize with me yay! and ill throw my excellent at all times hair around really fast so you know im ANGRY!

Killswitch is awesome, saw them twice live. Wicked pits at their concerts.
You dont listen to Lamb of God? They fuckin rule man. Get Laid to To Rest, Vigil, Blood Junkie and a few other songs if you've never heard them before. Those are their better songs imo.
Still, most of their shit is excellent. Not to mention their concerts are fuckin hardcore. Ive only been fucked up at 2 concerts in the pit. One was at a Hatebreed concert, had my nose broken twice but i was so coked up I didnt know till I got home and at a Lamb of God concert, had my fist broken in the pit.
Gotta love that shit man. Violent pits rock.

Man, I remember seeing Dying Fetus when they first came out. I think they opened for Cradle of Filth or....fuck, i cant remember the name of the band. There were only a handful of people there, all goths and head bangers. At a lil upstairs club in Toronto call the Reverb. Good fuckin show tho
If you ask me Dying Fetus is new scene too. Black/death metal was old as fuck by the time dying fetus came with boring grindcore crap like many other bands of that time. You guys are talking like it invented the whole metal scene. Give me a break.
Bathory, Venom, Obituary, Mayhem , Burzum, Marduk and Immortal are old scene bands(few of them). After those everything went down to toilet in metal scene. So i rather listen alternative rock bands and just old fashion heavy bands nowadays. Though the fact that i'm much older now probably have something to do with it.
Oh and Sabaton is pretty good new power metal band.

i agree. i wasnt trying to say they were old school. just saying i saw them a while back. Obviously they didnt create the black metal scene.
Oh, and you forgot one band in your list eh, Emperor. They are fuckin awesome
When I think about the main influence of extreme metal, I think about:
Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost and Bathory.
Of course there are a billion other early pioneers, like Possessed, Sarcofago, etc, but the 4 mentioned above should imho be considered the back bone of brutal metal.

hehe, wasnt trying to imply that dying fetus was old scene or even a pioneer. seemed like a fitting np: for my post. though i wouldnt call them boring, very technical and advanced.. but i could go on and on about new/old.. glad to see metal discussion, need more of it

Indeed. How did i forget Emperor. Emperor in the early days was truly evil. Wrath of the tyrant and nightside eclipse ruled back there.
yeah man
Hey, isnt your name 'DarknessWillFall" a song title by Shadows Fall? I think thats the name of the band. Not sure exactly. Saw them tho live twice. they opened for CoF

Could be. I haven't listened that band.
However i just recently played X360 game "The Darkness" when i signed up here. The Darkness voice says that sentence in the game so i just pick that for a name. It portraits the worlds state nicely i think.

Oh ok, gotcha.
Still, I think its a song by Shadows Fall. Or maybe the song title is "Darkness Falls". Its something like that.
They arent a bad band. They suck on cd but are really good energy and preformance wise live. Really good hype up band you know. Ive only seen them open shows, never been the headliner. They are good openers and get you into the moshing mood while your drinking waiting for the main band to come on.
Usually I save my moshing for the main band. If I start moshing right off the bat, by the time the main band comes on, im dead fuckin tired, sore and not really drunk.
I like to drink my face off during the opening acts then mosh while Im drunk as a skunk. That way, your not sore till you get home lol
Man, the worst thing happened a few years ago. I went to Ozzfest right. And its was a really hot day and it was at the Molson Ampitheatre in Toronto (an outdoor venue). I musta had like 15 or so beers and started moshing from the time Hatebreed came on till the main act, System of a Down, came on (i was there to see Hatebreed, my friends were there to see Sys).
Anyway, I was fuckin sore as hell by the time I got home. Like my back had siezed up, my neck was stiff as wood, I had bruises everywhere. I felt like i had the shit kicked outta me right. So I took 2 oxy's (80mg's)....man, I spent the next 2 days outta commission throwing up and praying for death on my couch. I couldnt move because of the pain, I couldnt eat cause my stomach was so sick and I couldnt take anymore painkillers cause I had no food in my stomach so it would make me even more sick right? Horriblle 2 days. Ever since then, I never combine booze and any type of painkiller. Just a bad combo if you ask me. But heat stroke, sore, no food, booze and painkillers = really bad combo.
