Either play CounterStrike or complete it again on a higher skill while you wait for some mods to come out. There isn't really much else you can do with a linear FPS.

Is it me or does the proper run worse than the original? The only thing I can see is that they got rid of some useless files, and you dont have to patch it to start playing. The game itself seems to run choppier than the original with the ape fix. Also the energy bar stays red, cant see alt fire inventory, have to edit autoexec.cfg to get rid of node graph and AI errors, plus its crashing in places the original didn't. I dont mean to sound ungrateful to Emporio, but why have a release thats not even as good as the original? Anyone else have these problems with the "proper"?

All those problems (except the performance issue) have been mentioned earlier in this thread.

The performance issue is actually my main question. Im curious if anyone else is actually seeing a decline in performance with this release, or if it just me.

I noticed no performance decrease.

None of the releases crashs in specific places anyway, so there's no way the new release would crash in place where the old one didn't.

For me, it's just random crashes. Once every 1 / 3 hours, "the memory cannot be read" error, or sometimes just a return to desktop, happens.

But if I load the game and do exactly the same thing, the game won't crash again.

Is the Working Axpi version better than the Emporio version? Can you play online with any of the versions? I'm playing the Emporio version and downloading the Axpi version now. I don't see anything wrong with the Emporio version besides thoes little things. On the Axpi version when you add the -steam switch, what does that do?
Thanks

When I say "crash", it hasn't necessarily crashed to desktop or given error. It just kind of stops working. When I hit the tilde key it mentions something to the effect that a certain AI routine was supposed to happen but didnt. I had this happen in the same spot (when Gordon first meets Alyx and she opens the elevator for him, she just stops functioning) on 3 different systems, I tried the AI disable 0 setting and everthing but only way to get around it is to quit game restart and load from last save.

You can't play online since there is no multiplayer with HL2.

If you mean Counter Strike source, wich is the only form of multiplayer valve released with HL2, it's not inclued in the emporio release of HL2. But there is a separate CS_source_emporio release that allows you to play online, on official steam servers.
You just need a steam account. You DL steam on valve's site (without any game, just steam.) And creat a free account. And that's enough ... after that you can uninstall steam, you just need the account.

Also, each time valve patch the official CS source, you need to update your warezed copy to keep on playing on official servers. Emporio released it's 5th update 1 or 2 weeks ago. Still worked 5 minutes ago.

So you need :
The release of CS source final (by emporio)
Cs source update 5 (still by emporio)
A free steam account.

And finaly there's another thread about CS source in this forum.

What is still wrong with the emporio release :

1 / You still have to fix your autoexec.cfg file manually to get read of the node/ AI bug.
2 / Random crashes every 1 to 3 hours, with teh message "memory cannot be read". (If there's any way to fix that, I missed it. I'll be glad to know !)
3 / Energy bar stay red instead of turnig green when full. (not really a problem)
4 / Secondary ammo not displayed. ( a bit bothering, but not to much)

What do you have to alter in the autoexec.cfg to get the ai bug to stop.

What if every other game dev started jumping on this steam bandwagon bullshit? It is taking this long for a release group to get even a proper out for the most anticipated game of the year, if everyone else starts using we're fuked then. No more try-before-you-buy anymore Sad

Actually the release is very playable after applying patches, its just not perfect. So to try before you buy it is just fine.

It's most likley your system that screw things up and not the release.
I have personally played many hours in a row and never had a single crash. And I have never seen anyone experience these crashes either.

Do a memory test with memtest86. And yes the memory can be bad even if other games work. Some games demand more of the memory than others and since this is a new and advanced engine i would say that this is one of the memory demanding games.
Obviously it can be something else, but the memory is easy to check so it's worth a try. Smile

I confirmed HALF-LIFE.2.PROPER.OFFLINE.NOSTEAM-AHU.RAR is working, but only with Ape fix. Without Ape fix I got error message related with steam connection, but with the ape fix, it has no difference with retail version.
For example, aux power is no more always red and hud shows second ammo properly, and no more ai disabled, node graph message.
Anyway I thank you guys who released this version. Very Happy

It's very entertaining reading through these forums about you poor schmucks who weren't smart enough to by the game. No bugs, no performance issues, online mods will all be playable... But hey, go ahead and enjoy the free version Wink

Actually it is included in the first emporio release. Create a shortcut to hl2.exe and add -steam -game cstrike. It just needs to be updated with the update 5.

Oh, ok, so the best thing going right now for online multiplay is Halo and UT2004. I though HL2 was going to be able to like the original Half Life with the servers option.

Works but how do you get past the steam validation check? I do have a steam account.
Thanks

Its always entertaining to hear from a schmuck who isn't smart enough to realize he is in an iso release forums. Thats like going to McDonalds to tell people how much you hate cheeseburgers. Oh and by the way if you took the time to read alot of people plan to buy the game eventually and are just checking out the releases to tie them over. Myself, I am holding out for the DVD.
