When would be a good time to buy a completely new system? I'm kinda waiting for PCI-Express and the new range of cards from Nvidia/Ati (coming at the end of this month I believe?), but I remember hearing about other developments in PC architecture...and what about Intels new processors? Aren't AMD changing the socket of their 64bit Athlons? If anyone can fill me in I'd appreciate it! Very Happy

Can you put any kind of time scale on that? I was thinking I might buy a new PC at the end of July.

Intel is planning some major changes for the PC-Architecture. They will release new chipsets wich feature PCI-Express, DDR2 and a the new LGA 775 socket. They are also planning a new form factor for motherboards called BTX. I have read somewhere that Intel wants to release the new chipsets and processors in Q2-Q3 2004, but can't find that source right now Wink
Just check anandtech, tomshardware or google for Intels or AMDs roadmaps.

Intel prepares to launch latest chipsets

Intel will launch its Grantsdale and Alderwood chipsets for Pentium 4 processors on 21 June, but they may not become widely adopted by users until early next year.

Intel unveiled the official names for Grantsdale and Alderwood at the Computex 2004 exhibition in Taipei.

There will be two versions of Grantsdale, the 915P and 915G, and one version of Alderwood, the 925X.

For Intel, the 915 and 925 chipsets mark an important technology transition from AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) to PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express for graphics cards.

The chipsets also offer support for DDR2 (Double Data Rate 2) memory and include support for Raid (redundant arrays of independent discs), Intel's High-Definition Audio technology and a feature that can turn a desktop PC into an access point for an 802.11 wireless network. The 915G will add integrated graphics

and a bit more..

Why wouldn't it be widely adpoted until next year? Does that mean individual home users like ourselves won't be able to get hold of the technology until 2005?

I think it means that many ppl just won't buy these new boards. Grantsdale and Alderwood boards don't have an AGP slot any more, so you have to buy a new gfx card as well, wich makes it even more expensive.
I recently bought an Intel D865PERLK and a Pentium P4E 3Ghz. I also thought about waiting till the new boards and cpus arrive, but i wanted to keep my gfx card. So i decided to buy the stuff right away and save some bucks. Smile

Its all about migration from one tech to another, look how long it took ISA to be pushed out of mobo's? You'll be able to get mobo's with PCI-Express but will you really want it before card companies use it?

If your looking to spend the next year or so building a PC, go for it. If you want a PC now then just buy the high end system now.

You can get an Ati card fairly cheap nowadays, a Radeon 9800pro is a very good card and well worth the money. Buy a system for HL2 and Doom3, and then wait 2-3 years and upgrade again with pci-express etc

Just read the AMD 64 for socket 940 (939) review/test and I got pretty stunned. I'm planning a upgrade when a mainboard combining pci-express, amd64 for 940 and maybe some more choices on water cooling blocks for processors using the 940 socket. Windows xp 64 could also be worth waiting for. Don't know if the beta is stable enough to run as main os in 64 mode. Intel P4 Prescots will get 64 bits enabled later this year but I hope they'll make them cooler than they are now.
