Thats why $650.00 is a joke for the lastest and greatest Nvidia card the GTX280 and thats just 1 part of a gamming PC
Between Microshit and Nvidia (and Nvidias fight with Intel over SLI bullshit) they just make it harder for the PC gamer, almost forcing us to take a hard look a consoles for relieve

Well such a graphics card is pretty enough to beat any console out there.
I think ppl perceive pc gaming as more expensive than console gaming.
But in my opinion that is not correct.
Problem is if you don't know much about computers you pay for expensive hardware that isn't good to play games.
Nowadays you can have a PC for about the same price as a console, but even more powerful. But you do have to pick your hardware correctly.
The problem or the good thing about the pc is that you have options. You can ramp up the games resolution up, you can tweak the graphics settings to they're liking and so on.
So people end up wanting to reach 1080p resolutions on pretty much any game. This obviously has a cost....on your wallet.
On the other side many games that come out on the PS3 or the xbox 360 aren't even close to 1080p. But for those gamers that don't even notice, they don't care.
But fact is most pc gamers end up spending more money on computers because they want to have the best graphics card, the best sound card, the best this and that.
Right now I got a portable computer with a Geforce 8700M . Pretty much equivalent to a desktop Geforce 8600. And fact is from what I could check I got a better experience than on consoles.
For instance. I've modded Oblivion to have even more detailed textures than the console versions. I run pretty much any game on the max settings, and this means in some cases more detailed than the console versions. Mass Effect is one example.
Gears of War, UT3, Call Of Duty 4 and so on. All maxed out no issues.
I Call Of Duty 4 on a server that supports up to 45 players. Something not possible on the console version.
Right now price vs performance a well built pc beats a console.

A well built PC -IS- a console. When they came out they were spectacular setups for the price.
The problem isn't the fact that PC hardware can't keep up, that's NEVER been the problem.
The problem is that every-day users are too god damn stupid to price their own PCs. They want a machine that they turn on and play.
And until MS releases a Windows Gamer Edition (basically what Xbox Dashboard is) with more hardware compatibility and support, along a set of standards for the hardware platform that developers and companies like Acer, Dell, Asus can look at, we'll never see PC gaming overtake consoles.

I couldn't find the thread for it and I don't think I should post it in the console section but it sorta fits here.

fable 2 is as consolish as an rpg could get.
it exhales console vibes through all it's pores, just like fable 1. couldn't make myself play that one for more than a day.
i tried fable 2 and it didn't even feel like i was playing an rpg. it was more of a.. 3rd person hacknslash with god mode on.
people who didn't like the first one will find exactly the same thing here, with somewhat better graphics. that being said, people who liked the first will love this.
not sure how many pc gamers are into this sort of experience, but hey, i ain't complaining about the fact that it gets ported. i'm complaining about the "it won't sell if it ain't dumbed down enough" mentality that seems prevalent amongst console devs.

It's the devs fault and the gamers fault. The great thing about consoles is that you can play games for over 4-5 years on the same hardware. Sure the graphics won't improve substantially over the years, but you'll be able to play with good graphics. The 'problem' with PC gaming is that the development of hardware and consequently software is just too damn fast. The engines have sexy and hot features, it all makes us horny, but it all gets less an less scalable. These days keeping up with the flow is inevitable, you either buy a new GPU or you get a game that runs and looks like utter crap. Sure your old hardware might be technically better than a console, but it cannot compare to the optimisation of a fixed format.
As a sidenote, I've always loved the ethics of a company like Blizzard. They won't give you the best graphics, but their games will run with the best graphical options possible on decent hardware. Most devs seem to aim more and more for the hightech crowd. That's fine and dandy, we all want to see great graphics, but think about the normal people too. Either make your engine as scalable as possible or give away a good GPU alongside your game. There have been enough games where I asked myself "Is this the GFX I get for this crappy performance?".

if that means, like alan wake, that the developer can then focus solely on making the game work well on pc AFTER its finished and the best it can be on console, then im all for it.
nothing worse than devs trying to do things simultaneously, and then doing a shitty job on the pc version just for the sake of getting it out at the same time. let them get their console version done, and then give their sole attention to the pc port. i dont mind waiting if its a good game, as long as i know its coming.
