Is it worth it, or will I find to old "looking"?
I am a bit of a graphic whore, but you know that
That aside, would the game play compensate?

Definately.

You can also try Tactics, but it's story, gameplay and above all, it's freedom factor is medicore at best compared to Fallout 1 & 2 IMO.

I've played Fallout Tactics alot more than i've played F1 and F2 (i've beaten them 2-3 times or something) mostly because it's easier on the eyes and it's just action, guts and carnage without too much 640x400 roleplaying Wink

But the first run you'll do of Fallout 2 is awesome in my opinion and not worth missing. It's not what Baldurs Gate 2 is to Baldurs Gate but not far off.

As for the graphics there are mods that allows you to play it in whatever resolution you want, it doesnt get a whole lot prettier but at least it's easier to see what's going on.

So in conclusion - Fallout Tactics if you just want some Fallout feeling and action which isnt too shabby to look at. Fallout 2 if you want the underlying story as well as the roleplaying elements. I would definitely run through F2 now with F3 coming up sooner or later.

You should really try Fallout 2. Just get the resolution patch from http://www.nma-fallout.com/ and the latest unofficial Killap's patch.

Then it's way better the Tactics where almost no story is present.

Instead of Killap's UO patch, get F2 Restoration patch. It includes Killap's UO patch and adds a number of new areas and a lot of quests. Most of the things that were left out on release of F2.

This is the thread with Restoration patch (v 1.2)
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42776

I'm also starting my F2 game with Restoration patch. Just have to get through Arroyo (a boring part for me Razz) and then the fun begins. Very Happy

It's worth it. One of the best games ever made, yes it might not be as enjoyable today if you never played it before but at least give it a try.

Ok getting F2 including the Restoration patch.
Would I need the official patches prior or?
1.0 and 1.1? or are there more?

Try to get F2 US version if you can.

No, you don't need any official patches, just F2RP.

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42776

Also there is one fix that's not yet included in F2RP.

And a lot of info can be found here :
http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/F2RP_Technical_Info

EDIT :

@SuTuRa
Yes, you can use High resolution patch with F2RP.

Vista? Works fine in XP with a G7.

Save often, and in different slots. Did you enjoy the original Fallout?

Hm, at the mo the game is more or less unplayable, you have to really be patience to aim and click and stuff, not fun at all. Looking for a fix but.

"Did you enjoy the original Fallout?"
Never played any FO game if that was directed at me?

He he, yea played that, but never finished, also did not try Immortal Throne.
Hm...there is something that has to do with the mouse prob here

Workaround for sluggish mouse cursor

Install a small utility called "sfall" (slightly modified ddraw.dll), set the dll override for "ddraw" to "(native, builtin)" in 'winecfg' (Libraries tab-> add override) and the mouse cursor behaves nicely again. Other benefits of sfall includes custom resolutions, scale filters, tweaks for encounter rate, world map travel time, removal of the 13 year game time limit.

Note: Several of the player-made mods and patches already include the sfall ddraw.dll.
But I wonder if this applies to my situation. It seem to be for "Wine"

seems a bit ambitious or?

Getting Tactics at the mo, maybe not as good as I and II but want to try it out at least. The mouse prob is really a pain, totally unplayable Sad

just keep in mind that the tactics gameplay has nothing in common with FO1+2 gameplay
Tactics = Jagged Alliance-like gameplay
FO1+2 = Baldurs Gate-like gameplay(ok FO is turnbased but you get what I mean)

Sure, I get it. Unless I find a fix for that mouse prob I will have to skip FO1/2 Sad, it's simply not fun. I also tried with "vanilla" install, but its the same. Will dig a bit more but before giving up.

The only thing I can think is that you are using vista? It doesn't play nice the best of times. What about mouse drivers, logitech's or generic?

Checked all drivers etc, using Logitechs. The mouse works fine when moving at "normal" speed, sort of moving from one point to another over the screen, but as soon as you slow down (aiming at a specific point, like in the menu select buttons etc) the pointer start to step/lag, really annoying. i will try to deinstall the Logi drivers and see if it persists.

EDIT:Same thing with generic mouse river, annoying lag.

Really odd, never heard of the sluggish mouse problem before, even with people who are running FO on vista.. Shame tho if you have to skip it, FO:T doesn't even begin to compare as a game :/.

Edit: Maybe an obvious question, but you did try without the reso patch, right? I've never played with that myself, and as I understand it it's still a relatively early version.

i will say this Fallout 1 can be finished with all quests in 3 days , Fallout 2 can be finished in 2 months doing only the main quest !!!! and 3 months if you do all the side quests !!!

Fallout 1 map was very small ,compared to Fallout 2 that was so gigantic you needed a car to drive[when you found the car engine] though it (even later they gave you a heli and a water airplane) now thats epic

nope US version has it, Water airplane - after you free the pilot from that Chinese city and win the karate tournament he will joint you and point to a junk yard when there is a air plane wreck but there are two engines missing you need to find them (just like the car engine that was hidden in the radioactive city slums) , the heli you will get after you have in your team that talking robot , you know the quest you have to find the robot parts - this robot has in his memory banks a map place with a hidden heli base but you get it to fly it after your car will be stolen and have to get it back from the thief's base (abandoned fuel station) [there is even a new car engine for your car if you have high negotiation/charisma skills and can convince the thief's mechanic to install it] with the fuel tanks (this heli runs on fuel)
