Ye ye ye, I remember it very well. It was an amazing game for the first hour or so, but then it gets so repetitive, and island/water/monsters is interesting for that much time. Exactly like Crysis.

System requirements, quite low compared to current titles.
(But the engine can even use a DX8 render path for older hardware.) |
Wow, nice scalability. But would be a shame running without the full dx10 feature set. Looks gorgeous from the previews while not being a system hog like Crysis. Anyways with very good dx10 cards selling for a very affordable 200 clams, no excuse not to run this game in all its glory.

While waiting for this game (which i'll definitely buy), i recommend replaying the original with Oblivion Lost mod that can be found on filefront. It is just like a new game, everything that i thought was wrong with the original is fixed. Guns are a lot more accurate, they added previously deleted monsters (like when you go into x16 lab and that fire ball thing blocks your door, now some dude that looks like jabba the hut blocks it. and little rat things that you could see in the CGI movie), they added more guns (like ppsh, ak47, mp7, and a lot of other guns that i definitely did not see in the original), they retextured all of the guns and they look a lot better now, you can join duty or freedom which adds extra quests, lots of drivable vehicles, can continue playing after the final mission, and a lot of other small changes.
Sig too big. -Nothing is too big for Fedor. Expect a nasty armbar.

Bump.
The games just around the corner, this topic needs more attention. It looks great so far, a huge improvement over SHOC which was already a brilliant game to start with.
Oh and PC Gamer gave it an 88% (SHOC got 83%) and say its Stalker the way it was meant to be...

You're right about the attention this game needs, it's a great game (if not the best of this year) and fills in on so many things where SHOC let down. I like the new upgrades system for your weapons, movie is somewhere on gametrailers.com. Just buy barrel upgrades, weight reduction, larger mags etc. at specialized vendors!

Did they fix the weapons? Never was able to get into STALKER because the weapons/aiming felt like shit.

Weapons and aiming are improved according to some previews, so let's hope for the best.

As Flowmo already said, try the "Oblivion Lost" mod! I hated the game for the very same reasons you posted, but playing with this mod totally fixed that issue for me. And boy, what a fantastic game it is now!

Definitely one of the best shooters, period. However, I do feel the AI could have needed a huge improvement in the original.

Be warned though, Oblivion Lost mod *greatly* increases the difficulty level of the game .. sometimes by preposterous amounts. It's not a bad thing, but it sure as hell makes the game a lot harder.
Bleeding is now fatal and a single scratch from a pseudo-dog will cause you to bleed. Once you start bleeding, and you don't bandage yourself, you continue to bleed until you die. Fast.
Enemies are a LOT smarter too, they'll trick you into chasing them while their friends ambush your from behind. They also make greater use of cover and they throw grenades if you're in cover yourself. They're also a hell of a lot more accurate with their weapons -- and if they can't hit you, they'll move closer so as to increase accuracy.
Bullet and grenades are now affected by gravity and wind too.
You won't find wandering raiders, bandits, or even troops that are packing the best armour and weapons anymore either. MP5s and severely damaged Shotguns and AK47s at best. Weapon degradation is also far more pronounced, with more damaged weapons constantly jamming.
A-Life has been fine-tuned so much so that the game really IS how Stalker was intended to be. A lot of the time, you can expect sudden attacks from roving groups of pseudo-dogs - and the dogs are also more likely to go after single targets rather than groups .. which usually ends in critical, quest-giving, NPCs being killed.
Nights are considerably darker now, so much so that you'll have an extremely hard time navigating and surviving combat - even with a flash-light. You'll need NV goggles to survive. Speaking of flash-lights, enemies now react almost instantly when they see your beam .. and they'll hunt you down, searching for you even after you turn it off.

Don't be so negative Oblivion Lost made STALKER to what it should have been: a challenging game with pretty good AI and awesome features.

Nah, that's the cheating route. Any game can be cut short by cheating. If you ignored the X-50 Power Armour and the Gauss Rifle (Cheat) then it was just as long as any other mod. I was always a huge proponent of Faikes mod -- but that was until I tried Oblivion Lost 2.0.
Awesome mod!
... now if only I could find the origional 2.xx alpha of Oblivion Lost itself. Everywhere I've looked there's either no hits or no seeds (or the crappy City demo)
