Oh and i just discovered something i didn't know before. To make certain products, you need the prerequisite raw materials. For example, to expand your steel industry (if you have one) you need surplus iron. If you don't have any iron, you can always import it. Once you turn it into steel it'll sell for a higher price, so it'll offset the cost of buying the iron. But one thing that pisses me off is that there is NO FUCKING WAY to find out which raw materials a certain product needs! I'm currently playing as Algeria, and i have a car industry. And i've got huge surpluses of steel, which cars obviously need, but my car industry still isn't expanding! And i have no fucking idea if steel is even one of the required raw materials, or if i need something else! And since there are over 100 different products, trying to guess which ones are required by trial and error would take a lifetime. This fucking pisses me off. The shitty manual doesn't explain shit. So now i have no idea how to expand my car industry, which could potentially make me huge profits and help me on my way towards conquering the world Smile

I guess i'll have to mail the devs and ask them... Sad

Well, according to wikipedia, cars apparently require alimunium as well. And to make aluminium, you need bauxite. So i'll try importing some bauxite and expanding my aluminium industry to see if that helps my car industry. But i have a feeling this fucking game requires some third raw material as well that you have absolutely no way of guessing and which only the fucking programmers themselves know what it is. WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY PUT SHIT LIKE THIS IN THE MANUAL!?!?!?!?

I've managed to get a stable 65% popularity and I'm at roughly 4000 score, but my economy is definitely suffering. I can't quite figure out the industry screen or how to start making the economy flourish.... any tips?

Also, I'd like to try and increase the population... is it better to build government run housing or?

Sure thing - I was going to write it in a very reviewy fashion but I really want to get back to playing so I'll just write it casually.

--------------------------------

With all the reading I'd done about the game in the past, on Nforce (now Nfohump) and otherwise, and being a lover of politics and the interaction of people and nations, I was overly excited about a title like GPS. I had so many hopes and dreams for what a game could be, in terms of depth and intrigue. Needless to say, Geo Political Simulator lived up to about 50% of them.

Lets start by saying, the game is not ready for release. It's buggy, full of memory leaks, I've had many bugs with newspaper headlines saying "_NULL ON TRIAL FOR ESPIONAGE" etc. The game would crash on regular basis. I would save, but it wouldn't actually save and I would lose a few hours of progress.

I played as my home country of Canada, and have been trying to drive military presence right down, increase my political relations with outside nations, many alliances requiring people to come to my aid in times of war, and also increasing my scientific abilities. I've had a few worldwide discoveries already, all internal still, haven't worldwide patented as to hold onto the technology for my gain. However, lets get on to a situation that left a bad taste in my mouth.

I had a journalist get kidnapped in Iraq and the political party threatened me and wanted bribes. I didn't give in and developed a secret service camp in Iraq. This didn't take too long, only a week or so, and tossed in hundreds of agents. Months (3 or so) went by and I was threatened several times by this terrorist group. I held fast and hoped my well trained agents (I put my secret service to maximum training in all areas) would be able to help out in some way. Eventually, I got a notice from my minister of homeland security saying they have found the location where the journalist is being held and an operation is underway to secure him! GREAT! I thought. Okay, a day goes by and I'm updated saying he's been rescued, and all is well. Fantastic, my popularity % goes up.

The next day I get a notice from the intermediary asking for the money for the hostage, and this time he is threatening execution. I assume this is just a delayed notice from him, and just close it. A couple days later, my chief of secret services tells me the journalist has been executed. My popularity shoots down. This ACTUALLY repeats itself roughly 10 times. The same journalist every time. I quit the game as I hadn't saved since this whole debacle started. I loaded back up and realized that the save I thought I was restoring to was actually 3 hours before the one I had actually saved. The game didn't save my progress.

Let's leave it from here that the game is BUGGY.

On the positive side, and there are lots, from the parts of the game I've experienced, it IS very in depth. There are LOTS of people to interact with in the game. Leaders of other countries, personalities in your own country to woo and get to speak out positively about you.

The ministries are very well done, and have lots of details. The legislation areas are especially cool. When you want to change a law, not a mandate, you can proposition it. If the people are really against it, they will demonstrate against you. The majority of the time, you'll notice there will always been small demonstrations. I created a gun tax, where you had to pay $400 per gun to the government and the hunters association lost its shit. Except it was only 500 demonstrators and the law passed 90% for, 10% against. Violence in my country went down. It was awesome to see that happen. I was able to view how my opponents were planning on voting. A couple days after I suggested the law, I clicked on the status of it, and saw it was 60%-50% for, but I didn't want to take any chances. So I had a meeting with the minority government leader, offfered him a coffee, then threatened to use the scandal my secret service had dug up earlier on him if he didn't vote for me. He was terrified and voted my way. I released it anyway, and he was removed from power.

Interacting with other nations is fantastic. The importing/exporting, embargos etc are just plain fun. Having your secret service enter a major country like China, with 1000 agents, having them pull industrial espionage against one of their major producers then showing up a day later with an offer sheet of something they desperately need, completely overpriced is such a satisfying feeling.

Basically, what i am getting at here is the game is very two faced. When it is patched, and polished, it's going to be an insanely addictive and time eating adventure of political agendas, spying, and world conflicts. As it stands right now, it wasn't worth my money, but once patched, I would've paid more.

Sound - 4.5/10 - The game doesn't have anything special in terms of sound. The clicks on objects are nothing immersing. The city sounds come off more tripe and irritating than anything

Presentation 6.0/10 - The game is put together nicely, albeit a bit cartoony. The menus aren't as polished as they could be, but nice all together. The newspaper is annoying and looks bad. The game is riddled with bugs currently, but this could go up significantly when polished.

Visuals - 4.5/10 - Game is poor graphically, but thats not what this low score is about. Often (on several computers) the graphics cut out completely, and you're left with a snow white covered planet with no textures. Piss poor buggy right now.

Gameplay - 10/10 - I'm writing this review based on the fact you're a fan of politics. The game has a insane amount of depth and so many things happen at once, that once you get used to it, it's completely fun. You feel like a head of state and everything seems to revolve around the decisions you make

Story - 7.0/10 - This is a hard one to gauge. Basically, there are several different game stories to pick from, and the World in 2008 seems to make the most sense. It's very real to the current world political climate. Current wars, political embargos, rebuilding afghanistan/iraq are both in there. Fits.

Replayablity - 9.5/10 - The game is not linear, and it's fun. You can play online with friends, though I wouldn't recommend it, not as fun as solo campaigns. The reason for this is the gameplay becomes slower and unless everyone is actually adept at the game someone fails and it throws everything out of whack. Playing with a new country each time and having so many different possible scenerios is just plain deep. Endless opportunities leaving me wanting to speed time up and play with every country in the world.

Overall - 7.5/10 - A good game with lots of potential once patched and polished. Definitely fun.

What can't you figure out specifically? All you really need to do is create commercial contracts to sell any surpluses you have. To increase production in an industry, you can either subsidise it or give it tax exemptions (in the game it's called "exonerate" for some reason). Once you do either or both of those things that industry will increase wich means you can sell even more surpluses. But you need to have enough raw materials first. The only industries that don't need raw materials are the raw material idnustries themselves, like various minerals, oil, gas, agricultural produce and so on. But like i said, it's impossible to know which industries need which raw materials, so you're basically fucked. And i seem to have stumbled upon some strange bug in my Algeria game where nobody will buy or sell any products from/to me. So now i'm basically fucked as Algeria. This game could be SOOOO fucking good, but it just has all these bugs and minor annoyances and shit.
