Not all PS2 games look bad lol (but maybe that's what you thought when reading my post)... 7 years to polish a game, that is still not out is quite impressive, i have no doubt it's gonna be an instant hit. Since it's coming from Blizzard, i'm pretty sure they spent these 7 years to polish it and not change the 3D engine each year (duke nukem forever anyone) to restart the development process.
Comparing the graphics to a PS2 engine wasn't really a "bash", just a statement.
I still think Metal Gear Solid 3 on the PS2 has nice graphics, even for 2008. |
when I read your post I thought you compared it negatively with ps2, sorry for that, the games I saw where not that good on the ps2, but hey i did not see much of them
I find it incredible that they are working on a title for four years and look at what they made, I cannot wait to get it, also nothing leaked at all, they must have a good policy/spirit for the company

“It’s been in development for a few years. About four.” Wilson (lead dev) admits and of course, when asked the next Big Question: a release date, he gives the typical Blizzard response. “When it’s done.”
Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce was quick to add that, even after four years, “it’s far too early in development.” |
blizzard language for 1 or 1.5 years probably, after four years they should have it 60-80% complete I hope

Blizzard always perfect there games that's why it takes so long. I don't mind waiting for that quality though, I can count on Blizzard unlike Crytek etc.

I stayed up an watched the live reveal from WWI in the online stream...
I fucking lost my mind with excitement when it was actually released. Hearing its been in development for about 4 years is VERY good news.
Blizzard has the highest standards for their games and I think they actually provided everyone with exactly what they want with Diablo 3. Basically, Diablo 2.1. Upgraded graphics, slightly more in depth gameplay (SLIGHTLY), and what seems like more competitive online play. Lots of guilding I'm hearing and lots of ladder/online tournaments etc. Not sure HOW that will all work, but... the excitement is indescribable for me right now.

Blizzard has the WOW cash cow, with an upcoming expansion that will have the wow crack heads selling their TV's for. So I cant see why they would need to rush this at all. I agree with Daz, I hope they take there time and ship it out with pure perfection, its going to take that to top D1 and 2! How sweet does the artwork look in those screen shots, its got a great look already.

The art direction in Blizzard games is basically what makes them great.
Looking at games like WoW now and WC3, and hell even SC.. the games hold up. They may not look realistic at all, but it doesn't have to look realistic to be a nice looking game.
This game seems like the art has had even MORE time put in than the past games.. The outdoor environments from the gameplay clip are SO lush and gorgeous looking. This is the same with the creature models... it just looks like a fantastic looking game.
Also, If they've been developing it for 4 years already, AND based on that video demo they showed, the game is done really being developed and is in the polishing phases. Expect it about a year after SC2 is released.

I think so too, it looks quite finished, although they are probably finished building the entire world I guess, my bet will be december 2009, first starcraft 2 in my greedy fingers, with a small chance of luck we will see Duke sometime this year or the next, eager to play that too

I disagree, the graphics style in Warcraft 3 and WoW, and now possibly D3, is really not good to me. That said, I really like the graphics in Warcraft 2, Diablo 1 and Starcraft. Warcraft 2's graphics are sort of similar to W3 & WoW's graphics, but they somehow look alot better with 2D sprites.

I agree with what's being told above : i think it will be released a year after StarCraft II, they used to keep that pace before they were focusing on WoW (well technically they are still with these expansions..) with a new game each year.
But thinking about this would mean we will have to wait AGES to have a new blizzard game after these 2 since afaik they have 3 teams : one on WoW (which is still working on WoW), one on Diablo and one on RTS. But hey, maybe i'm all wrong, because it seems they are working on a new MMORPG if you look at their job recruitementand maybe they do have a 4th team (I doubt the WoW team is working on anything else since they need to put out lots of contents / expansions).

@AssA:
The only really colorful thing on those screenshots is the spells those mages use. And spells were always colorful in the Diablo universe. The female barbarians armor in the first shot is dark green, beige and gray, the only thing that might tick you off there is the blonde hair.
And it's not like the other Diablos had only dark and serious enemies, there were small red fallens (act1), violet bats (act2+3) and blue snakes (act5, werent blue in act2).
So stop complaining, it could be a lot worse.

at last it's revealed
yesterday i watched 2 times the gameplay trailer, several times the cinematic etc.
so my comments on some of the aspetcs:
my first thoughts when i saw the graphics was : it looks exactly like Titan Quest- and that's a good thing..there are interesting enemy models, the environment and art are beautiful, the music is fantastic as in every blizzard game.. The thing that troubles me are the character models- they are average at best, but hopefully things will change since this is early version (?)
as for the gameplay, they are trying to make it more dynamic and fast- with the fast skill swap mechanics and health orb pickup- great, ( i wonder- there will be standard potions right?)
oh and the last boss fight was epic especially when he killed 2 of the party members- trowed one to the ground, and bite off the other's head..
i guess it's limitation of the engine that the corpses don't stay but dissapear? i hope that to change
the only aspect that disappointed me was the witch doctor class... a violet colored jungle guy, half naked, anorexic & having Parkinson and wearing ugly giant mask..(i guess i always hated that kind of heroes- i hated act 3 of diablo 2 for all the jungles and the fetish guys & shamans ) The worst of all he's the replacement for the coolest char in D2- the necromancer- it would be so cool to have the pale white haired dude/dudete in his/hers bone armor in full 3D- the wich doctoer stole his powers i guess I actually liked the wall of zombies
as i heard somewhere the next char class is a rouge.. like in D1- maybe combination of the assassin & amazon ?
after pausing on some skill selection i saw that some skills were on 4/5 level- so no more 20 lvl skills?
The inventory uses a bag system, you don't have all the grid in your inv. unlocked before you get an additional bag... not bad i guess
overall i'm very excited about the new D, it looks unrealistic but i hope for a release in december ..

Yes there will be, I saw a minor health potion drop in the 800mb hd gameplay video.

If you watch his class on the official homepage where he doesn't wear gear its way better. No violet mask or sword. But yeah, I don't like him that much either.

The way that he interacts with the enemies reminds of Titan Quest and since both the games use Havok I'm sure this will be a fun game to play.
As for the characters...as long as they make cool looking armor design I'm sure that's not gonna be a problem, especially if it runs at a decent framerate with a decent amount of future victims on screen.

That's the disappointing part for me, the fact that they are removing the necro from the game and substituting in with something that is more in place in the Warcraft universe than in Diablo.
Stil from what I read on Gamespot(I know that's not the best source of info) there is still hope:
"When asked about it during the gameplay design seminar, Blizzard developers were quick to point out that the Witch Doctor is very much its own class, and that its presence in the game wouldn't necessarily require the removal of the Necromancer in Diablo III. In other words, it's conceivable that both classes could end up in Diablo III, even if it looks unlikely to us at this point. ".

While I agree above that the models characters are kinda blocky, especially for players rather than NPC, I'm sure it would look a lot nicer with FSAA on : you can clearly see, specially on the HD Gameplay video they didn't enable FSAA (I guess it doesn't work for now but i'm sure it'll have built in FSAA, just like WoW).

The barbarian looks flat despite the hints of his actual physique.

I think the game looks spectacular. And the gameplay video feels so fluid. So what if its not looking like crysis? In a game like Diablo, its about the gameplay not the graphics.

You're misunderstanding. It's not how 'advanced' the graphcis are that we're discussing, it's the graphics *style*. If it was up to me it could be looking like Diablo 1 or 2 as long as the gameplay was great. In fact, I'd even prefer if it did.

LOL hilarious. The biggest game announcment that people have been waiting for for years and it's not officialy out in stores and people are already complaining. Take it for what it is. From what they have shown us this game looks amazing compared to all other Action RPG's that have come out since D2. Just goes to show how some people's expectations are unrealistic and assume the world revolves around them and their ideas of what should be. D3 will rock. WHy ? because it's blizzard and from anyones recollection when was the last time Blizzard made a shitty game ? Never.

Yeah I think so too, they felt more serious/believable in 2d. Felt less like kid's games. Though they still are, just felt less that way.

Gfx is good and will allow anyone to play this and not only the ones with uber monster computers just like diablo 2. And with the number of simultanious enemies on the screen if would be a lag-fest if the games gfx was to demanding.
The only thing I dont like about the look if the game is the apparent cartoonish look. Compared to D1 and 2, this looks more like WoW or WC3.
As I never played the previous ones online Im looking forward to trying out some battle.net adventure with a few friends.
