Still running my ASUS Rampage X48 with single chanell RAM here
I have tried with two different brands and Mhz.
1 Gb DDR2 OCZ FLEX 1200 Mhz x4
1 Gb DDR2 Corsair Dominator 1066 Mhz x4
The board posts and boot up when I have 2Gb in the two slots furthest away from the CPU (B1 B2)
When ever I try ANY of the slots closest to the CPU (A1 A2) the board will not post, "DET DRAM"
I also set the timings and voltage manually, "1066" "5,5,5,15" "2.10v" NO GO!, still "DET DRAM"
Any one with some knowledge of ASUS vs RAM probs please gimme some hints here.
I know that buying a EVGA 780I would probably solve all this, but its just to much of a hassle.
I talked to ASUS support GER...always the same answer "The board is sensitive as to the settings of the RAM, please set them manually" or " The RAM must be in our QVL"
Tried it all and yes BOTH MODULES ARE IN THE FRACKING QVL, NO GO!
Is there something else here that should or could be tweaked in the BIOS. CPU Voltage, PCI-E speed...anything?.
Gave up on the ASUS forum as you only get crap answers, at least I did.
Cheers.
ASUS Rampage Formula (Latest chipset driv and BIOS)
C2D 8500
EVGA 8800GTX
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity
etc etc...

A lot of boards are having problems with memory when all slots are used. Has to do mostly with the ram not getting enough voltage. Have you tried increasing the voltage slightly or was 2.1V already higher than stock?
What is your bus speed? I'm guessing that your ram is running faster than your fsb. If so, then you could try underclocking your ram. Try a 1:1 ratio.

Ok...treid FRACKING everything!!!
Under clocked, searched the net, found stuff and tried it...NO GO!
Will call ASUS in the morn...AGAIN! and I wont play ball!
There are some clues here LINK
But no go...
I tried to tweak the tRD/PL setting, FSB Termination etc...no go.
I just feel like ordering an ol trustworthy EVGA 780/90i at the mo...knowing that Nehalem is just around the corner its gonna be a pretty expensive affair

hmmm i say send the RAM back and get 4gb in 2x2gb sticks in return, if it will only run with 2 sticks.
Shouldnt happen though cause i have always known Intel chipsets to be very compatible with ram, used to hearing these stories from nforce mobos.
but at that price you shouldnt have any issues to start with.
EDIT: 790 is nforce right ? i thought i read nvidia wont let intel use SLI on their boards and Intel wont let the new CPU revisions work on nforce at all.

I just got the rampage this weekend and am using 2x2 gb corsair 8500 without issue. have you memtested all your ram? Do that and see if any of your sticks give errors. The fact that its only those two slots may mean your board is messed up.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one

Just got an asus maximus formula with a couple of kingston PC8500 ddr2 1066 1gb and it wont work in dual channel at 1066MHz, only single. Changed timing, dram voltage, NB voltage, flashed to latest bios and nothing, the same DET DRAM or VRAM TEST crap... Dont know what else I can do, Im running on single channel for now, and there are other users complaining of the same thing on asus forums.

Cheers guys. Yea there are a lot of peeps with this prob on the Rampage, if you look at the various RAM maker forums and on ASUS forum as well. I will call ASUS today and give em hell.
As for the 2x2Gb modules, read that some can get them to work and some not. It could be one option, but if that don't work I will probably just RMA this board once and for all. Here in Germany you get the Corsair Dominator 4Gb (2x2Gb) 1066 kit for around 119Euro, so it aint to expensive.
This is the only prob I have with this board, OCing otherwise is a walk in the park.
EDIT: Checked the Mem Config utility on Corrsair's site and they recommend
Ordered it and should be here end of the week. 119€ at K&M Elektronik (Ger e-shop)
Its not on ASUS QVL but Fthat, that list must be the most dated on the internet.
If this don't work I will RMA the board 100%.
Funny thing is, I can throw any of the RAM modules I mentioned in this thread (OCZ Flex 1200Mhz, Corsair Dominator 1066Mhz)in my son's PC (my ol EVGA 680i board) and they just work!

Got some 2x2Gb Mushkin 1066Mhz (just for the F of it) during a test drive in Frankfurt today (Nissan Qashqai) NO GO!!!! "DET DRAM" no matter what. Would not even post in single channel (1B, 2B). The guy in the shop said i have 2 weeks to return them so no prob, but I am not really exited about the corsair 2x2Gb 1066 kit now . Anyho, will try it out when it comes and by 99% most likely RMA the mobo.

i would honestly try a diff brand and type of mobo, ASUS is very overrated(doesnt mean itsucks) but i would stick with intel chipset.

Not tonight...100%. Also my case is inside this IKEA furniture/cabinet (rear/front open) so its a pain to roll the case out of it every time and fiddle with cables and crap. I will watch RUS-SPA tonight and do it in the morn...maybe

Had to test this morning...NO FRACKING GO!!!!!. I can run both modules in single channel only. Will have another go and try some BIOS tweaks after work today, but I am not confident here at all!. 4Gb RAM in Fracking single channel on a 250€ mobo, WTF!

I know, its always like that . Have a thread at Corsair's forum. A guy there told me that a memory controller might be broken. He gave me some stuff to try out. Will do it later tonight.

hmm i would say RMA the board ( you could be without computer for a while then though ) and get the same chipset from a different brand , upon return of the new ASUS board sell it.

Success!!!. Bought a new Formula today IN A SHOP! not over the Inet (in case it went tits up) Will send back the fuked one and sell it as soon as I get the replacement. Just popped in my 2x2Gb 1066 Dominators and SHE JUST BOOTED UP!.
Maybe not so wow, but if you have been seeing the dreaded "DET DRAM" for over a month thinking its been a RAM prob, it's WOW! I tell ya.
So finally I can install my WC kit for this mobo, been sitting in its box for 3 weeks now. But not today

Well, the next hurdle will be to get a WC kit for a 4870x2, I am pretty sure that a double slot gracard will be in the way of the south bridge wc cooler.
Its possible that the current 3870x2 wc kit might fit, but as the card is not out yet its hard to tell. Some pics of the card without the cooler surfaced today and its pretty similar to the 3870x2 in layout.
I guess by the time I got it all installed...its time for a nehalem board or somet

Finally felt like installing all the crap I been buying over the last month or so.
Mobo freezers and a new CPU freezer etc.
What I realized 100% doing this was that I need a NEW CASE!!!!
Check out the pics and you will see why.
As you can see I decided to move the rad to the outside, she is no beauty maybe but she COOL'S!. Went from 38c to 27c on the CPU, from 48-50 to 35 on the NB/SB, now that's something .
Old build as comparison
Just closed her up ready to go.
Inner life (or mess maybe] of the ol Li.
The best case I have seen so far for this stuff is the old Silverstone TJ07.
That case is like made for a big 360 rad in bottom compartment on its side venting out air through the mesh, PSU on its side behind it venting out on the other side. Crap loads of space for HD's and what have you. Simple and clean design etc.
Been looking at the new Tyr 2000 from Lian, but...the more I think the ol TJ07 will do a better job in the end.
Oh, and I will also get the HD 4870x2 under water as soon as it's out .
