the width comes from autostitch, Which is a freeware ( ! ) program that blends panoramic photo's together. When you stand on one spot and shoot photo's in a 360 degree circle around you you end up with a long strip:

This strip is then cropped in photoshop (or any other program) to remove the black edges where to photo's don't overlap. And thet it's just rotating the image 180° and applying the distortion --> polar coordinates filter in photoshop.

Edit: It is important to set the correct scale settings in autostitch or else you will end up with an image that is 26644 X 3389 Pixels Very Happy
