Game is incredible. Minus the fucking Steam problems that made me waste an hour tonight trying to register, this game has been worth the purchase.

I was thinking of buying it now, but I really wanted the DVD not the cds. Not sure if I can hold out for it though.

I know I like to set my config for slightly higher than I should (I like visual over performance), but is HL2 as choppy as Vampire Bloodlines (which I havent played much yet, but it does look great albeit a bit choppy)?

Steam is actually BitTorrent, Bram Cohen who created BitTorrent was hired by valve to create steam, maybe thats why its a bit slow, since u are actually dl:ing from others !

I got the DVD here in the UK and it took AGES to install! The big problem is i just wanted to install HL2 not CS so i told it not to install CS (it's a tick box) if you do this you get a "file not found error" from the installer every time! 5 years in the makeing and they cannot even get the installer to work! Anyway you have to install CS with HL2 or it wont work!

GREAT game BTW.....

Fuck this shit, cant install the game!!! ARGHHH!!!!!
Bought it yesterday, installation took a very long time thnx to Steam. When I started playing game crashed and didnt work. Had to remove it but now I cant install it. during installation I get a message that hl23.cab is corrupt. I tried unpacking the cab files using winrar and everything got unpacked. WTF?!
Do you have to install the game on your C: partition or what? I've tried all other partitions with the same result, and I cant install it on C: cause I dont have enough space. The only solution now is to format C:, rearrange some partitions and install it on C:
But before I do that I want to know if there is some other way I can install the game?
Formating is a bitch.

Just a tip to those who want better frame rates and are having problems with ATi cards.
Get the ATi Catalyst 4.12 beta drivers @ http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4701.html

They should give you a pretty good boost in framerates...and they work with PunkBuster and CoD...

I bought the game, installed it, played a couple of hours and...it's really great.

But, while unlocking the game online, I was thinking the following:
What if Steam stops working one day? How will we be able to install and unlock the game?
And nowadays: When reinstalling the game, do we have to unlock the game again?

The game is great, but Steam is really a pain in the *ss.
I know some students who bought HL2 but don't have internet on their studentroom. They bought the game just to play SP, not for MP. And it's not just an option to use a 56K modem because it's not just going online to validate the key for about 1 minute. No, it's for unlocking the complete game, even Cheatstrike (you cannot install HL2 without it) needs to be unlocked.... Unlocking takes a while (20min with my DSL, but servers where offcourse overloaded).
Validating a key online, ok, but unlocking the complete game, no thanks.
