ffs give some more info if you want help... what soundcard, what drivers, what amp/speakers/whatever...
when you refer to rca's i assume you mean analogue rca's not the spdif rca output... what OS? in vista you need to select digital or analogue output default on playback devices. What software/mediaplayer etc? some allow you to select which output to use... if you mean the digital rca output works but not the toslink optical output then check what data format ur soundcard is pumping it out at... my older amp had diff specs for spdif/toslink inputs...

Give more info if you want more help

note to self: don't make tech threads while drunk Razz

a simple glance at the manual said that optical out will not work when HDMI is plugged in. I planned on running a 25ft optical cord from my HTPC to my receiver, I was just trying to make sure the used receiver I picked up worked Wink

BUMP! Razz

ok so now that I have located my 25 ft optical cable I have been trying to get shit working ok. First, I had to uninstall the Nvidia audio drivers and replace with newest Realtek AC97 drivers to enable spdif output.

Everything seems to be working OK ... the problem is that my receiver (JVC RX-D302) is not recognizing the signal coming from the computer as DTS (actually it thinks it is DD, and yes it has both DD and DTS). Also, I tried my dvd player with optical output and the DTS track and everything works fine ('DTS' comes up on receiver display).

you can see, all 5.1 channels are being output:

here are the SPDIF settings in AC3filter setup:

here are the DTS filter settings from MPC:

any ideas? anyone see anything wrong in the config? also I have tried with a number of .mkvs with DTS, same result.

edited to add:

maybe I'm just being retarded? it is still outputting all 5.1 channels so I guess it really doesn't matter if my receiver recognizes it as DTS. Just wondering if there would be a difference in how my receiver handles a DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 signal...

also edited to add, if you didn't realize I am using the built in sound hardware in my asus a8n-sli mb.

Just for the sake of it, try using SPDIF (in MPC) instead as sound setting and let the reciever decode it.

Haven't read the entire thread.

A quick question, it's is quite common on HDb... You sure your receiver can handle HD DTS? DTS in DVD = ~756kbps, DTS in those rips = ~1.5mbps, DTS in blurays = sky's the limit. Perhaps it's too much for the receiver.

Sorry for not reading the entire thread, don't have time to read and research now.

If I do this I get no sound :/

btw the receiver has an auto surround function that works perfectly from a dvd source...

entire thread is crap except today's post Wink And yes, it is actually a 7.1 receiver ... I can even select virtual 7.1 (adding simulated rear surrround to 5.1 speakers) from a DTS-ES track on a DVD, so I'm sure the receiver can handle it. Also I did try with both a 1.5 mb DTS track (the matrix) and a 640 kbps track (bourne movies) and had the same result.

So I guess the question is, can anyone with a HTPC confirm that the receiver recognizes the audio as DTS?

I guess I shouldn't complain though, the sound is a million times better in 5.1 than 2.0 that I've been listening to for months Razz

kinda talking to myself, but really does it matter what the receiver thinks the audio is? whether or not it thinks it is DTS or DD, doesn't it really come down to bitrate? So even if it is playing DTS and thinks it is DD, it will still be the full bitrate of DTS, which is really the only difference between the two...?

and LOL, the bullets flying everywhere in Assembly is freaking my cat out

When you transmit in DD or DTS, the compression is completely different, so yeah it does matter. How is the receiver connected? If through HDMI, and it's a newer HDMI port, try sending decoding on the PC, and sending PCM instead.

BTW, you are sure your receiver knows how to deal with DTS, right?

audio is direct from pc to receiver via toslink. receiver also supports DTS-ES 7.1 ...

an update if you care Smile

problem was that I was also using the MPC internal DTS decoder at the same time as ac3 filter, so it wasn't actually using SPDIF passthrough to send the audio to the receiver (which would use its own DTS decoder). This also caused about 30-40% more CPU usage, meaning I was getting stuttering on some movies (1080p with 1.5mb DTS track). Disabled the internal filter and now everything appears to be in order Razz

= success!
