Actually, Black Bush (irish) is nice as well. Not too versed in Irish whisky though, I tend to stick with highland stuff.

Were going to create a new thread, but found this one and as there are appears to be no other threads I decided to resurrect it
I was stockpiling whisky for the cold winter months, and discovered this gem(picture bellow):
"The Balvenie New Oak, aged 17 years is a marriage of Balvenie from Bourbon Wood and Balvenie from Sherry Wood vatted together in New American Oak"
I just can't get enough of it, so rich so smooth, so many wooden tones in it. Wish I had ordered two bottles
"Wooden" whisky with a very long aftertaste, for me it lasts for 10 minutes at least. It is like the air in the forest during wet autumn weather with all these wet yellow and red leaves and tree bark, then it slowly transforms into very sharp pear aftertaste.
Aroma in the glass: herbal and wooden tones, honey. With a drop of water, caramel and dried fruits aroma becomes more prevalent.
Taste: Salty at first, a little bit herbal bitterness latter on, deep bark taste and then sweetness strikes on. Yummy  With a drop of water, taste becomes more bitter and mostly bark.
Dried glass aroma: Smoky, wooden and sweet.

Yes, I wrote it myself. And taste, aroma are not imaginary at all, just drink more. The more you drink the more your tongue receptors are getting used to alcohol and the "burning" becoming less and less dominant. This is when you start to notice flavors
EDIT: Just to clarify a bit. By drinking more I ment not drinking more during sampling session, but over period of time. For someone it takes weeks, for others - months.

well i like the Scottish single malts as well
mixing those or drink them on the rocks is not done
i guess it is an acquired taste though
some of them come bottled on cask strength (60% alcohol)
since the goodies are quite expensive i often stick with beer anyway
edit: to name brand as well, Laphroiag

Hmm... Triple distillation, mostly the trait of Irish whiskey. And lowlands - never tried whisky from that region. * WB, adds a remainder to order it next year *

Oh, also about nosing the aromas, it very importtant to use proper glass - tulip shaped are best followed by cognac glasses. |

They have distillerys covering all 3 of the scotish regions so have a peak around for the rest of there stuff if your after highlands or Islay whiskeys .. Plus they are the only *true* tripple distilled whiskey in scotland.

Among whiskies mentioned in this thread Talisker and Laphroiag have been on my "to order" list for a while, but Auchentoshan is at the top of list now
So far my hit list is as follows:
- The Balvenie New Oak 17 years old - mentioned it a few posts ago.
- Glengoyne 17 Year old - the best "fruits & flowers" whisky I have tried to date.
- Highland Park 18 Years old - love the very light trace of peat smoke in aftertaste.
- Lagavulin 16 Years old - the first and so far the only heavy peated and smoky whisky I have tried. As it is more oily than others it is my best medicine against sore throat if I managed to catch the cold 
BTW, what do you do with tubes, cardboard boxes and empty bottles ? Do you keep them as trophies ?
Personally I only keep tubes and always throw away cardboard boxes. Also keep empty bottles if I find them aesthetically pleasing

Actually whatever Jameson is / isn't a single malt is a potential holy war material
Single malt - all malts are from a single distillery, no grain.
Blended - mixture of single malts from multiple distilleries with grain whisky / whiskey
Vatted - mixture of single malts without grain whisky / whiskey. Although term is not stable, sometimes in multi-casks whiskies it is used to indicate the last cask whisky used to mature in.
Pure pot still - whiskey produced from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley.
Jameson whiskeys are a blend of single malts and pure pot still whiskeys in various proportions from a single distillery.
So it is not a blended whiskey in a canonical sense and not a single malt as it's contains grain. One may say it's `blended`
Most Jameson whiskeys I drink are 12 years old, I prefer to drink it during summer times from cut glass with the ice cubes, or from a frozen cut glass(empty glass left for 30 minutes in freezer). |
