Maybe they're kind of stupid.
If you have a legit key you just enter it and that's all. No DVD check.

this protection wins. and here's my theory why, its hardcoded into the game and has nothing to do with securom (which im sure reloaded cracked sucessfully). the problem here would be to find all the traps bioware put into the game, which could take months or never. easy ones are the save and galaxy map, but there are others im seeing. such as not being able to exit the cars, or equip certian armor thats made for the character meant to use it. then again, i could be wrong, and they could be a fully working crack in the next 6 days, at which point im buying it if theres not. if im right, expect other devolopers to follow suit and watch pc game rip scene die.

If the game doesn't know it's pirated, how is it going to act up then?

Wrong, being unable to exit the Mako vehicle is a game bug, not protection. Even if it was, it cant be hardcoded into the game, as the game would still have to recognize the game being pirated in order to activate said defense mechanism.
So, by cracking Securom or w/e, you're making sure you wont be getting detected.
But ofc, Relolded sux shit, and couldnt make a crack if their life depended on it.

the question is, if its hardcorded, how to change the game to fool it into thinking its not pirated, without changing the game? there could be thousands of checks all though out the millions of lines of code - you would have to find every single call. but like i said, its just a theory that its biowares own way to protect their game from within their code.

It doesn't matter how many million checks there are if the variables it check doesn't show it as being pirated.

I'm no cracktastic game haxor, but wouldnt a simple crc check on the main executable theoreticaly alert such code that the game might be pirated?

i expect its checking the checksum of the exe file. reason is the error popup "game is comprimised". and there could be a million different subroutines that check it. im pretty sure its not very easy to fake the checksum of a file.

I'd like to state that Newty182's method did in fact work for me. I loaded up my autosaved game on the Citadel and was able to quick save and hard save. HOWEVER, at some point within 10 minutes of playing it stopped working, and I can no longer save.

while i know what you are trying to say, hardcoded is the wrong term for it. It wouldnt be the first game using a professional protection together with custom checks.

If there are legit problems with the game there is a possibility of buying the game, taking the key from it and returning it back to the store. I did that with Bioshock in Wal-mart. First time I came they exchanged the game for the same one and the second time I came they gave me the money back.
Maybe same can be done with tis title since its not working properly for everyone.

did the file that u modified revert back to the old settings? if so i wonder if changing the properties to read only would sort it.. hrmm

Nope. I just checked the files and they are just as I set them.

Could it be that the game itself checks for securom to be present on the system, and then locks up in key places if it is not found?

Didn't work for me (RLD), but this may be because of corrupted saves.
I managed to succesfully go to another planets via console while your on Normandy(planet - what to enter in console): Code: |
Noveria - AT BIOA_ICE00 Start_ICE00_01
Feros - AT BIOA_WAR00 Start_WAR00_01
Virmire - AT BIOA_JUG00 Start_JUG00_01
Caleston - AT BIOA_LAV00 Start_LAV00_01
Ilos - AT BIOA_LOS00 Start_LOS00_01
Oculon - AT BIOA_STA00 start_STA00_01 |

I used the console to go to the ice-planet (forgot it's name). I did a few jobs for the locals and finally went to a ride on the surface (I was able to exit/enter the Mako just fine with the Q button).
But I encountered a new problem. On that planet, sometimes elevators get stuck. First I had to redo the last part of a mission, because after I activated a lift, the doors didn't close and I was stuck in the default "squad-elevator-position". After I arrived at the research station on the surface, and did a little battling with the local security/geth, again, the progress was halted by a broken lift. Never happened on the Citadel, so this is either planet related bug or just another issue with the crack.

Using the console for travel just breaks the immersion for me.
