I have an Athlon 1.4 Ghz. It's not an XP one. If I wanted to upgrade to lets say 2400+ XP would I have to get a new motherboard? Or it doesn't matter?

yes. Your Athlon is an older Thunderbird, the newer XPs need different voltages. A 2400+ would have a Thoroughbred core, so a new MB would be required.

Check your mobo manual first to see what kind of CPUs it supports, if it doesnt support the new Athlon XP you need a new one.

Man that sucks. When I bought my comp like a month later the Athlon XP ones came out. I would perfer just switching the CPUs so I don't have to take out every single part.

Look on the homepage of your mobo manufacturer, maybe you have luck and your board supports an athlon xp.

See the thing is I'm not really sure what exact motherboard I have. Is there a way to find out? I'm pretty sure it's a VIA just don't know what kind.

I dont think that VIA builds boards, only chipsets. Open your case, and look for a number, i know there are a lot on it, but look for a bigger printed one and google for it. That should help.

Well I'm happy with my RAM...sort of. More would help but I don't really care. 512 is good enough. Plus I only have 2 slots for RAM and right now they're taken up. Also thing that sucks too is that my motherboard only supports up to Athlon XP 2400+. But hey thats a gig faster than what I have now. Plus people this isn't a customized comp or anything. It's a HP!

it is pc2100 thats 266hz, and HP has special motherboards, did you mention this? that it was a HP. you are stuck with that speed ram, more ram won't help much.

Yes I know that. Hell this isn't happening anytime soon. I'll probably just get a motherboard and cpu combo and a new case and move everything to the new case. Eventually I'll get better RAM. I don't have a lot of money to spend. Plus I don't even have a job yet (I'm 16).
