Everyone, in their haste to condemn the images, are forgetting one thing;

"Final Fantasy - N64" was blasted as fake at first, after the Siggraph tech demo was unearthed. It wasn't fake and it was going to be a direct sequel of FFVI, using a 3D engine. That, too, was created by Siggraph and Squaresoft. So why isn't it possible these images were created by Valve and Siggraph?

-=Edit=-

Here;

< FFVI-2, N64. Created by Siggraph and Squaresoft.

< Chocobo Battler, N64. Created by Siggraph and Squaresoft.

Both projects were, obviously, canned when the PS1 came out -- but as you can see; they EXISTED. Don't be so quick to condemn these HL3 shots.

Haha, this is definitely a real picture, not a screenshot from a game, although it's probably been modified a bit in photoshop to make it more computer-graphics'ish. It's not so much the graphics that gives it away as the amount of detail though; there's *way* too much detail for it to be from a game scene, even a tech-demo.

Yeah looks legit, and the overuse of bloom is realistic, it's what a lot of developers do nowadays, we see it all the time.

Even if these are not real, this is what I could imagine HL3 to look like.
It does have that source engine feel to it.

btw, when i looked at a table during a certain period in school, it was fucking bright and the color or its brightness kinda bleed over! And i think bloom and or HDR are trying to achieve that effect.

FFVI-2 never was planned to exist. The tech demo was simply just that and never was intended on being a real game for any console.

Quote:
Final Fantasy VI: The Interactive CG Game (also known as the Final Fantasy SGI demo, or Final Fantasy x (not related to the actual 10th game in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy X) was a short demonstration produced by Square using characters and settings from Final Fantasy VI. Produced using new Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) Onyx workstations acquired by Square, the demo was Square's first foray into 3D graphics, and many assumed that it was a precursor to a new Final Fantasy title for the Nintendo 64 video game console, which also used SGI hardware.[75] Square, however, had not yet committed to Nintendo's console at the time of the demo's production, and much of the technology demonstrated in the demo was later put to use in the rendering of full motion video sequences for Final Fantasy VII and subsequent games for the PlayStation. The demo itself featured Terra Branford, Locke Cole, and Shadow in a series of battles. The game was controlled largely through mouse gestures: for example, moving the cursor in the shape of a star would summon a dragon to attack.[76]

It was simply a flex of muscles.

Uh, I was around when the FF64 thing happened, and I don't think anyone called them fake. When they hit the net, they were clearly labeled as being part of a 3D FF tech demo running on an SGI workstation. So, while I never saw anyone thinking they were fake (as in, not made by Square), there was (and still is, somewhat) a TON of confusion about the exact nature of the demo (which never had anything to do with N64, really; it was made and ran on SGI workstation computers. Square never wrote a single line of code for an N64 FF game).

By the way, I think you have "Siggraph" confused with "Silicon Graphics." Siggraph doesn't make anything; Siggraph is the name of a computer graphics convention, not a company (well, it's the name of the organization that runs the event, but you get the idea). Silicon Graphics, Inc (SGI) is a legendary maker of high-power, professional graphics workstation computers (strictly for development and research and professional purposes; they don't sell consumer computers). And SGI workstations are what Square developed the 3D FF demo on, so, yeah, I think that's where you got confused.

They need an excuse to sell new unneeded video cards to idiots. Developers can easily make that graphics with pixel shader 1.

Whilst Bloom is potentially a nice feature (and less of a burden on performance than real HDR) the fact is that some developers used it merely to make their games seem flashier than they were. You can see the logic in it because it 'transformed' something that looked 'current gen' into the fad that was 'next-gen'. Thankfully that's kind of faded out but not without a few casualties along the way Very Happy
