Did you know that Nvidia fucked up so bad with the 5800 that they acknowledged their screw up and scraped the 5800 from their production lines? You can't get the 5800 anymore and you should not have gotten it. It has a very weak chip the NV30 which cannot handle PS2.0 like cards of the era are supposed to, like the Radeon series. Go run 3d mark 2005, there you will c how bad your card sucks when it comes to PS2.0 coz the test is formed around it. And as you may probably know HL2 is full of PS2.0, that stress test gives you vague sketch of how you will run HL2 but the game it's self will drop alot harder then the stress test, and there you will feel the mistake you made by still having that 5800 in your computer.

The entire line of FX cards runs HL2/CS:S in direct X 8.0 mode because they cant run it in 9.0 correctly. that does increase ur FPS cause 8.0 is faster then 9.0. Lol, you don´t even see the full effects of the game, doesn’t that feel fucked up? Lol i know i would feel fucked. Basically the FX is a fucked up experiment, it's not good at all.

Who cares if you run in dx8 in this game. DX9 is not even good in source.
I had to wear sunglasses when i tried it with DX9, that's how shiny it is. Very Happy
To be totally honest, I would without a doubt force hl2 to run in DX8 with some program just to make it as realistic as possible.

DX9 shaders are great but when they are overused as in source they just blow.

I don´t think they are overused, i think that HL2 is the first game that really shows what DX9 is, and it´s not SUNGLASS shiney at all, but then again, you have a GF4, that´s oudated, you don´t see it as it is supposed to be seen.

Here is a screenshot i took from 1 of mine CSS sessions, i run a GF 6800 GT, this is how it's supposed to be (and note that HL2 will have better PSing than CSS)

Then you just start CSS and click "Video Stress Test" or something from the menu.

Exactly I have a gf4 and shaders are not even close to as shiny as dx9 shaders are and this is a fact. Just look at farcry, another game where shaders are overused. You can look at any dx9 game basicly and you get the same thing.
And the picture you show is WAY too shiny. It's inside a fricking "room" with dirty bricks on the floor and outside the room is alot of sand, trust me, they shuld NOT shine like that Wink
Well unless there is a cleaning lady that once a day cleans the floor Wink
That room shuld have had bumb maped floor bricks without no shiny effect whatsoever, that had been sweet.
They are way overused. But hey some people problary like it just as i like bloom in other games which also isn't very realistic. But HL2 to me shuld be as realistic as possible and the shiny walls/bricks do not deliver that at all :/

Edit: Here is a picture i took at almost the same spot. And as you can see it's alot less shiny than on your picture. Wink
But like i said, it still shuldn't shine this much.

Sorry for the big picture.

Lol i see your point, but it´s all matter of lightning, and geez... those bricks don´t have to be dirty and dusty, maybe someone cleaned it like 15 mins ago LOL.

The one thing i hate about the lighting effects is that it looks like every stone has a layer of glass on it. IT SUCKS AND IT'S UNREALISTIC!

Also the map de_dust. There's a reason it's called DUST! because it's dusty! But no more, nooooo, now it's aaaaall cleaned and has a layer of glass on it! i hate it! BAAAH!!

ATI is getting much better with drivers.

The stress is problary very sensitive to cpu speeds. And maybe high fsb also (if he have that).
An easy way to find out would be to downclock your cpu a few hundred mhz and check the results out. If it drops like mad it's without a doubt cpu hungry.

pallebrun, your picture doesn't really look that much different.

It looks fantastic on your card, considering it's age. Is that how you play the game normally.

BTW, the stress test is actually alot more forgiving FPS wise then the actual game. So expect slower FPS in game.

But really I don't mind anything above 30fps, so i'm sure i'll be happy whatever. It's just I know some people can't stand less then 60fps.

Yeah i know. Most maps the fps are nice, but the dust maps and the office map seem to take the most of a hitting on me card. Peace,

You can clearly see the lack of effect, but yeah, you've probably read it before, your card is running the game on DX8 instead of DX9 so you do have a much better FPS then you're supposed to have. Though, the penalty is not seeing the full effects of the game.

I do not understand why you get better results on the higher settings then on the recommended settings btw, makes no sense.
