Quote:
There is war in the human kingdom. Hordes of orcs are invading the land from the north. To keep up the strength of the king's troops, the blacksmiths of the realm are constantly producing new weapons. Those who break the law await a terrible fate: they are sentenced to heavy labor in the penal colony to dig the ORE needed to create weapons.

The area is surrounded by a magical barrier, a sphere of two thousand meters in diameter which spans the prison like a dome. Entering the barrier doesn't pose a problem, but leaving the sphere is impossible... at least for a living creature.

You may be innocent, yet you are sent to prison where you have to compete with hostile creatures. From now on, your only goal is survival... and eventually finding a way to escape.

This game... Me Gusta

Even with all the bugs and the crashing (mostly due to a win7 + player kit combo I think, playing at locked 30fps is for noobs like razorsedge after all Twisted Evil) I still had a blast with this game.
The combat is very hard to get used to and the targeting system at times makes me want to rage hard but hey... still better than the crap that I've seen in Risen 2 so far.

I'm seriously considering to install a small XP partition to play Gothic 2 if it has the same issues as the first.

The game is excellent. I tend to replay Gothic I & II at least once a year.

There is an excellent gfx mod for Gothic II from vurt, which includes alot of new textures and even some decor to make the world more appealing. http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1145749-G2-MOD-Vurt-s-Gothic-II-Graphics-Overhaul

I just wish there was such a mod for Gothic aswell. (So vurt, could you do it pls? ) But there is a reloaded mod on in the making, which, as always, looks like it will never be finished. We'll see. http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/forums/441-Gothic-Reloaded-Mod

Gothic I and II both should run on windows 8 AFAIK, no need to install XP for them. ¨

Windows 8?
WINDOWS 8?!
I DON'T NEED TO STINKIN' WINDOWS 8! Mad
To play gothic, that is.

Nah, I'm suspicious that most of the crashing I had was due to win7 + player kit + unlock fps, but I didn't want to try playing it @ 22fps to be absolutely certain of that.

Thanks for the vurt mod, it was just what I was looking for G2.
And yeah vurt, get working on the first gothic, chop chop! Mad

@toni: I see, but before you begin partitioning your drive. Gothic should run just fine on a virtual box aswell, as long as the gfx drivers work ok.

I'm not going to install XP unless I see about the same (or more) issues and crashes as I did in the original.
So for now W7 it is. Smile

Also, the game seems to use DX9 instead of DX8 (I'm assuming G1 used DX8, the bundled redist had some DX8.0 stuff. However radonpro detected it so maybe it was DX9 after all...) AND since you no longer have to jump through hoops to unlock the FPS I'm hopeful to see much less issues with it.

I still keep the happy Gothic duo installed on my (now my father's) oldass P4 2.4Ghz+1GB RAM +9800pro + WinXP 32bit along with other classics. Very Happy Vintage games + vintage PC + vintage 4:3 monitor=vintage awesomesauce.

In all seriousness, these games are the very definition of timeless masterpieces. I doubt we'll ever see something similar, not with the same degree of freedom and challenge at least. Hell, even the creators themselves failed at giving us proper sequels. Sad (with the exception of Risen 1 - first half of the game)

wait, by default its 24 fps? I installed the fan patch or whatever, not sure if i was using player kit, but i had no issues on win 7.

I played it right after nvidia finally fixed dx7 games in their drivers after people started complaining gothic 1 and 2 didn't work anymore Very Happy

Needless to say, amazing game. I can't wait to play 2 and 3, but i need a vacation to pull that off. Laughing

So far so good, it's MUCH more stable than the original. It's actually pretty demanding in some parts of the city, I'll try it on the laptop tomorrow (got a xp 32bit partition in there Very Happy) but I'm pretty sure that it's just due to the game being demanding at times.

Also can't lock the FPS with radeonpro or rivatunerstatistics server Neutral

I assume you have the gold edition with the expansion? That's a must. I played it on Win7 and XP, didn't see any difference personally. I doubt going to XP will have effect.

Fucked it up with gothic 2 big time. Sad

Spent too many LP on useless shit (animal trophies, mostly since those were useful money-wise on the original), now I'm at the 3rd chapter and after returning from the colony having killed ~half of the orcs on one-vs-one matches the sleeper guys roast me quite a bit until I'm in sword swinging range. Sad

Started over again but now spending my LP more cautiously and trying a more ranged build but I'm just going over so many stuff a second time and not really feeling like pushing through or continuing from my old save.

le fu Crying or Very sad

EDIT: ... and it's all in the manual Neutral
Damn I'm getting old and senile Laughing

i remember this one was my first rpg that played seriously back in 2002 i think, i wasnt interested in rpgs then, sadly havent replayed since then but i do plan to do it soon

As for gothic 2 (which is my favorite game btw Razz), i heard about it half a year later when a friend told me that a friend of his has it and i was OMGOMGOMG Laughing , this one finished it i think 6-7 times but never as a mage; and still remember the first time you get to the valley of mines and get thrown there at midnight, think thats the most special and atmospheric moment in a game for me til this day.

As I've been trying out a few mods, I came by a far better solution for all the problems Gothic.exe can make.

description here:

http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1340357-Release-Gothic-%C2%BD-%C2%97-SystemPack-%28ENG-DEU%29

For Gothic I:

1. Install fresh game. (Steam or whatever)
2. Install http://dl1.worldofplayers.ru/games/gothic/modmaking/mdk/gothic1_playerkit-1.08k.exe
3. install http://dl1.worldofplayers.ru/games/gothic/patches/G2/systempack/g1classic-systempack-1.0.exe

For Gothic II (about the same procedure):

1. install Gothic II
2. Install http://dl1.worldofplayers.ru/games/gothic/patches/G2/gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe
3. install http://www.bendlins.de/nico/gothic2/gothic2_playerkit-2.6f.exe
4. install http://dl1.worldofplayers.ru/games/gothic/patches/G2/systempack/g2notr-systempack-1.0.exe

Its just a lot of fixes together and it opens up a few tweaks like adjusting FOV etc. Instead of the widescreen fix, you can now just select the needed resolution ingame. The FPS fix is already included and others more.

There is now a new demo for the reloaded mod for Gothic. They have upgraded the geometric details in assets about 3x with new textures and include the DX11 mod.

For a game that old, it looks fantastic imo.

Sadly, only the first chapter of the game is playable atm.

https://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_537.htm

Sorry, the link is german, but the installation file lets you chose english, so that should work aswell.

The installer is totally hassle free. I tried it and it runs fine.

Pics here: http://demo.gothic-reloaded-mod.de/
