I'm being paid a grand to be cast in a student film for one of my friends. I play a character who smokes a lot. Can I look like I'm smoking by not inhaling and still maintain the illusion of smoking?

As an ex smoker I would say no.. why not smoke herbal fags? they taste shite but at least no nicotene

I really don't think that would help him look like a real smoker for a role in a film. That is like what a kid does the first time he tries a cig followed by coughing.

i hate smoking yet manage to force myself to smoke a joint when i wanna get high.
its easy and you wont get addicted, it tastes like shit

Depends on your character. Fake the inhaling and see what the director has to say. In some films they are not suppost to harm or hurt animals and they make it look true so I am sure you can fake smoking with a tiny bit of help. They want the movie to look good too. Sometimes they will only show shots of you taking a drag but can flip that and not show you inhaling.
If you want to be an actor you gotta learn how to fake it.

If you are a someone trying to break into acting you do a lot of stupid things. It may not be right but still a lot will give it a try and playing a character who smokes, and not being too hard can make or break you. Just don't pickup the smoking habit imo.

not true, i smoked a couple of cigs when i was 13, then when i was 16 i started for real, stupid i know, but between 13 and 16 i never smoked one cig.
