Anyone know what the problem is. I think the drive is in the wrong mode. This is an unmodified machine.

What problems does your drive have , does it humm (reading signs) when you insert your original game disks ?
Did you had problems updating your xbox360 when you connected to Live ? Wrongly made update makes such a thing.
Did you clean the laser lens of your xbox360 reader ? it helps in such conditions .
Does it eject the game disk after it reads ? maybe its the Open Tray error .
You can also check if you laser is failing in a quick test insert a dvd5 and run it with mp3/pic/movies/other if its reads then you passed 1 test then insert a dvd9 if it reads then your drive is OK . Failing lasers don't read the second layer of the dvd9.

Its not my 360 and I'm going up to flash it tommorow. I think that will solve the problem.
However I've never flashed a xbox before.

This is over a year old. It's a Samsung.
Okay it won't read DVD9's. Just says open tray. Will a flash solve the problem or will he have to replace the drive?

Someone reckons it could be the drive going into Mode B somehow.

Doubt it's the laser though. It plays DVD5's flawlessly.

What makes you say that, besides Skyz that's a pretty wide ranging statement.

Thats really strange. Well iv heard and experienced DVD burners having problem with cheap DVD9 brands. Mine have problems burning them after 30 burns. Tried same brand on a new burner, no problems. Don't think it happens with Verbatim tho.

read your words and as you said - "it only reads dvd5 discs" this means a laser failing or a dirty lens , the funny part in it is you believe that by actually applying a cracked flash you can fix this drive

I'm going to take the drive apart and get the multimeter out to adjust the pots. I'll also clean the lens with surgical spirit and a cotton bud.
I think that will solve the problem.

Well I reduced the pots to 2.90 and still nothing. I cleaned the lens with some surgical spirit and cotton buds. He's going to buy a new one and give the old one to me.
I'll get a new drive and swap over the pcb.

Be sure your friend is telling you the truth, because those sysmptons are afaik exactly like a drive flashed with the wrong drivekey. If thats the case I don't think there is anyway to get the correct drivekey unless the original firmware was backed up if somebody really did mess with it in the first place.

I know for a fact the machine hasn't been hacked. He's not the technical minded type.
I've been the only person to open that machine. Plus it's the exact symptoms of a failing laser.

In that case she would have one red light and a strange error.
