All's the government has to do is drop the tax they put on fuel.
They'll lose a fair bit, but at the end of the day sooner of later the way things are shaping up, no-one will be able to afford petrol in the U.K.

Gasoline in America is actually cheaper than it was in the 1950s, after you adjust for taxes and inflation.

It used to be very cheap, but now it has adjusted back up, in my opinion it is still pretty cheap compared to other countries. People got used to driving big trucks/SUVs on artifically cheap gas and now it has come to more realistic prices they cant afford it any more.

What we should do is heavily tax company cars, gas guzzling 4x4 and any car that costs over 20,000. have cheaper fule for small eco friendly cars and make public transport practically free. That way the selfish bastards will be forced out of thier motors.

Peoples obsession with thier cars has to stop at some point or we will be in bigger shit than we are now.

Even @ $500 a BBL, oil will still be a huge commodity. We will not abandon hydro carbons in any of our lifetimes. After we reach the point where synthetic hydrocarbons are cheaper than the hydrocarbon we pull out of the ground, we will switch to man made hydrocarbons.

China is showing no signs of slowing down, Pakistan is on the rise. These nations alone will keep prices and dependency high.

Cars only amount for less than %15 percent of worlds emissions. Heck, cattle produce around %7 percent, and we have the Chinese with a new found love for beef.

Dont hate the oil companies, dont hate car lovers. The blame needs to be placed on big business. And FYI, more expensive cars are cleaner burning cars.

Increasing Taxes is not the answer, its just a temporary fix, that will bite everyone in the ass. Just look at what the Royalty Review has done and is going to do to Alberta.

First graph is uncorrected prices and the second one inflation adjusted.

If gas costs more money, then there's more economic incentive to develop alternative fuels. With that incentive you can afford to live on this rock for a few more years. I think it's a fair deal. And as Javlar pointed out, Sweden - a nation with much lower GDP per capita than America can somehow magically afford prices that are several times larger AND STILL manage to move their freight somehow...

Diesel is far more expensive than petrol in the UK now. Quite a lot of people are having their cars converted to LPG.
