I'll admit - when I first took a look at this game I was fairly intrigued. The classes looked interesting, the setting was fairly unique, and it looked beautiful graphically. Add to that the fact that the developers had enough balls to go for the M rating, and it pretty much had me sold.
However, the more I dug the grimmer the picture became:
1) Talked to a guy in Vanguard who was in the closed beta - basically summarized that it was about as finished as Vanguard was upon launch (alpha stage more or less).
Zones are fairly boxed in, and it felt more like an MMO FPS than RPG. Lots of mindless clicking. He said the closest thing he could compare the combat to was Dark Messiah of Might and Magic but faster. Also that character customization was on the light side.
2) As I started reading more and more about it - player cities that were instanced etc. etc. I couldn't help but get that shitty feeling I get when something doesn't smell right - kinda like when they touted Guild Wars as a Free to play MMO. Sorry, but an MMO does not have 80% of its stuff instanced.
and finally the kicker and killer....
3) Age of Conan is coming to X360. Sorry, but you can't have an MMO on a console. That alone speaks volumes about the depth of this game (or lack thereof). Guild Wars was in no way an MMO, and me thinks neither is this. More false advertising and bullshit claims.
Until I see otherwise , this thing just went off my buy list. Won't be conned like that again. That said, still give them props for going for the M rating. However, they shouldn't be allowed to tout a console portable game as an MMO - such a thing can't exist.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Well right off the bat I can tell you, whatever this guys thinks, he is exaggerating big time. Vanguard was an absolute disaster! No getting around that fact. AoC may not be completely polished but from having played the Beta myself I can tell you, it's in a far far more finished state than Vanguard. A few features may be missing, but it will be playable.

True about the zones, although they have removed many invisible walls that were there was mere Beta restrictions.
Clicking? combat doesn't require you to click your mouse at all. It's the least 'clicky' game I've played. And combat like Dark Messiah? that's a bad thing??! that game had the best melee combat in a game yet! AoC isn't entirely like that, but it's certainly toward that style.. moving away from auto-attacks, and more toward real interaction.

Final Fantasy XI? Being on the PS2 never hurt that game none.
Excessive instancing does concern me aswell, but I haven't experienced and ins and outs of it, so I'm keeping an open mind for now.
I'd highly suggest trying it yourself before writing the game off.

Final Fantasy XI? PS2? Come on now, don't tell me we're going to have to dip our standards that low. Consoles are not conducive to MMOs. It's just not natural and simply doesn't work.
As for trying it before writing it off - yea, you're absolutely right. However, in order to try an MMO (or so called MMO in this case), you kinda gotta buy it. Thus, eliminating the whole purpose of trying
I'd like to be pleasantly surprised by this title, I really would, nothing would make me happier. However, I'm not George W. Bush....fool me once.....
Also, not to get off topic but just so you know Radamez,
Vanguard in Jan. 2007 = alpha
October 2007 = beta
April 2008 = The game it was supposed to be.
They've really shaped it up, give it another shot. I did, and am glad

The game can be played perfectly well with a gamepad, anyway.

You can create an account with Funcom on May 2nd, and you pay the 5 dollars to funcom. That 5 dollars also buys you 10 additional days of play time.

you don't have to pay for the file planet beta client, and it lasts until retail launch.

Is a similar deal open to the European market?

Probably. Check the official forums though because I am not sure. http://forums.ageofconan.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

How does the game play on older machines? Any of you out there with a slightly older computer willing to share how it runs with all settings set to low? I'm aware it is in beta and optimizing is nowhere finished.
