Teamwork in pubs is based on the players attitude and willingness to play the game for that purpose it's supposed to be played. If you play TF 2 and find it too hard to play with others as a team, you will fail miserably unless the other team plays even worse. A well coordinated enemy team will push you to play as a team in order to achieve something, even those selfish kills. At least the game promotes teamplay instead of CS where a 1337 player can take out a whole team with his deagle..

I will use 1-2 examples I have thought and would gladly test with some folks in order to prove you how team work succeeds instead of godlike players: eg. a place well guarded by sentry guns with engineers and demos guarding the CP. Think of coordinating an attack with two spies sapping the sentry guns and a pyro or two coming behind to burn the engineers before they unsap them. A sniper will aim for the demo that put the stickeis on the CP.
Second: uber a spy and rush the choke spot and backstab everyone

The emergent behavior of multiple people acting selfishly on the same team, may seem like teamwork, but is not the case and nor is TF2 designed to award teamwork to the point where people will play as a team.

Tf2 is equally as chaotic as CS and even similar patterns of "teamwork" emerge in CS, despite it's lack of it's rock-scissors-paper classes to aid the appearance of teamwork. Multiple people covering a planted bomb for example. This is the exactly the same dynamic as seen in Tf2 pubs, with multiple people defending the same choke point. TF2's class system and special abilities does allow for more instances of appearing-to-be-teamwork, but these occur for personal gain.

In fact you rarely do see much gameplay that does encourage teamwork effectively. Many co-op mods fail completely to do so, for the most part being simply a single-player game with a friend running around. RPGs can be equally bad, though have greater scope for teamwork mechanics through shared experience and incredibly specialized classes.

TF2's most probable argument for being designed towards awarding teamwork is the Heavy/Medic combo. Which shares similar team working attributes with any Gunner/Driver combination from battlefield, they both share a requirement of close proximity and disables/slows movement for the gunner/heavy and disables weaponry for your driver or medic. Both fail to entice teamwork out of the participants. As I'm sure well BF players know.

The medic or driver will dance around, trying to save his own skin (coincidentally also his gunner's skin) whilst the heavy/gunner picks off everything he can see, with little thought to what is endangering his medic or driver. In fact the BF gunner is more likely to help out the driver because he is linked physically, whereas a TF2 heavy can survive on his own.

TF2 doesn't offer much to incite teamwork over other FPS's. It's as old hat as Netrek and on the whole an FPS experience in pubs tends to be a lonely, chaotic one. If that's different on different servers, then you can hardly argue teamwork is designed into the game.

What precisely is your definition of teamwork? You seem to have narrow criteria, doubly so when you consider it's impossible to determine (factually) the presence or absence of altruism in an action (particularly one made by someone else entirely).

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly but team work is all about the perception of the resulting behaviour and not of the individual actions motives. Whether a predator works with it's pack altruistically or not doesn't diminish what we perceive to be a group of individuals working together as a team.

So, what does 'team work' mean to you exactly?

Exactly Ispep. You said the word: altruism. I find the times I rush as a pyro into a crowd of medics with heavies and others around, more rewarding when I see the whole team pushing back to earna few meters for my team.

Btw...this might help my beloved pyro even more:

Then all is left are single player games and MP deathmatch.

Who said you need friends to enjoy it? I play with strangers 99% of my time and I'm having a blast.

Updates for TF2, Source Engine, SourceTV Coming Tomorrow
February 13, 2008, 1:59 pm - Chris Bokitch

Updates to Team Fortress 2, the Source Engine, and SourceTV will be released tomorrow. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. You can find the full change list below.

Source Engine

* Refactored how lightmaps are downloaded to the graphics card at level load. On some hardware configurations this can lower level load times significantly
* Optimized some particle systems to improve performance on some hardware configurations
* Player stats are now sent up as they change, rather than when the player dies
* Improved playback of sub-frame sounds
* Fixed a crash caused by alt-tabs during map load
* Eliminated unnecessary temporary memory allocation in scenefilecache

Team Fortress 2

* Badlands released
* Changes to Dustbowl
o Added a new access point to the stage2 attacker gates (drop-down left from spawn), allowing attackers a way to reach the left route without being subjected to the spam and sentry gun fire
o Fixed a gap in stage 3, cap 1 that allowed a player with to wiggle above the "ceiling" clip
o Fixed a gap behind stage 1, cap 1 house
o Fixed a high perch on stage1 cap1 house roof
o Fixed a perch offering view of nodraw textures and the skybox (stage1 cap2 rock barrier)
o Fixed a few places where rockets/demoman pipes could pass through non-solid models
o Sealed up a gap over stage1 lower startgate
o Clipped off tall windows in stage 3 to prevent sentry guns from behind built behind them
* Changes to Capture the Flag Well
o Fixed trains not starting on map spawn
o Removed cap association from red spawns that were spamming console
* Changes to Granary
o Removed spawn timing advantage from the middle (from -3 to 0)
o Fixed several model perch exploits (red, blue cp1 gate and blue cp2 gate pipe)
o Fixed a few places where players could get stuck between containers and silos
o Adjusted playerclips on red container that made it appear like players were floating
* Added a small delay (200 ms) before a zoomed sniper shot can get a critical hit
* Added server side convar mp_fadetoblack. Same functionality as Counter-Strike, used mainly during in-person tournaments and LAN events
* Added flamethrower "sizzle" sound when the Pyro is hitting a target
* Updated explosion debris to be a bit darker
* Fixed idle players not being kicked from the server if mp_allowspectators was set to 0
* Added ctf_well to the default mapcycle.txt file
* Added ctf_well to the default motd.txt file
* Fixed floor tile material type
* Fixed some weapon damage info missing from TF2 game stats
* Made some small changes to the Demoman viewmodel that were causing performance problems
* Added exec'ing a .cfg file on the client when you select a class to play.
* Added a new timer to the HUD to show the value of mp_timelimit. This is useful if you're playing a timed match on 2Fort, where you only set a timelimit on the server and no other win conditions.
* Added server log entry for buildings destroyed by their owner
* Fixed sentry gun shadows being clipped
* Updated glass material

SourceTV

* SourceTV now uses a hidden slot on the game server. This allows for 24 player servers to also have a SourceTV proxy connected to it
* Fixed Pyro's flamethrower flames not showing up in SourceTV

hey everyone.. Little problem here, let's see if anyone can help.

I would like to actually BUY this game, but for some reason my credit card, paypal, etc are not accepted on steam..! (and this happens only on steam!)

So, is there any other way to get this game without buying the whole fuckin orange box? Any steam key sellers around the web? I wanna play this, but it seems like I can't...

thanks

I doubt it, you need to go through steam to get on all the official servers. Without steam you'll have to mess about with cracked servers (if there are any) and it's just not worth it considering the game costs practically nothing.

What card are you using? I'm sure i used paypal to buy TF2 or possibly just paid direct i cant remember, it's just a standard UK debit card.

Is it not possible to use someone elses card and give them the cash?

New medic waepons

The Blutsaugher
For players that earn one third of the 36 new medic achievements, they will be given a new syringe gun. Called "The Blutsaugher," this new weapon no longer has the ability to score critical hits against an opponent. Instead it will draw health from enemies each time a syringe hits. Especially useful as a weapon to retreat away from the fight while staying alive.

The Critzcrieg
Once a medic has earned two thirds of the achievements, they will be granted "The Critzcrieg." This new medigun uses its ubercharge not for invulnerability, but to give its recipient 100% chance to fire critical ordinance. Medics and the player they are charging need to be careful though, because as much fun as it is to fire critical rockets as fast as you can, the other team will see what you're up to and try to put a quick stop to your plan.

The Ubersaw
For the determined medic that has earned all 36 of the new achievements, they will find themselves the proud owner of "The Ubersaw," which will take damage done in melee attacks and convert it directly to ubercharge. Four hits with this new weapon will fully charge whatever medigun the medic has equpped.

It was scheduled to be premiered on GameTrailers TV at 1 am EST on Spike TV in the US and then put up on gametrailers after. However several hours before that someone figured out a way to trick steam into downloading the video. And thus it was leaked. Not very long before release, but still before the official release.

I thought it was confirmed for the 20th? Valve always releases patches in the afternoon PST. The only time they ever unlocked a game / release a patch in the middle of the night was the time Orange Box launched.

Seems there is a bug that if you type "achievement_unlock_all" into the console it will give you all the achievements with zero work. Use at your own risk. If you just want the new weapons but get the rest of the achievements legit type

"achievement_unlock TF_MEDIC_ACHIEVE_PROGRESS1"
"achievement_unlock TF_MEDIC_ACHIEVE_PROGRESS2"
"achievement_unlock TF_MEDIC_ACHIEVE_PROGRESS3"

Again use at your own risk.

Also heard this works with portal and Ep 2 as well.
