the 680i series supports the 45nm chips but not the wolfdale or something. so would i have to get a cpu that is supported or would a e8400 work in a asus striker extreme and then i just update the bios to make it fully supported?

In my case I bought a E8500 and that DID NOT work on my EVGA 680i after patching. Maybe you read about it in some thread in this section. In case of the E8400 I have not yet heard about any probs with the EVGA board at least.

Ah, my bad. You will need a CPU that is pre 45nm, for sure. Patch and then install the E8xxx or whatever. But why not go for a 780i right away?

but the asus site says it supports 45nm out of the box. but from what i read it just doesnt support the wolfdale chips ootb. and i already have a 790i. this is for a friend. and from what i read, the 780i is just a hack of the 680i boards to get 3way sli support. so why pay extra for something that wont even be used

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=397&l4=0&model=1439&modelmenu=1

nvm hes just gonna get a 780i so he can take advantage of pcie 2.0
