On the day we signed the agreement to license Warhammer from Games Workshop, I promised them that we would create a great and glorious game, a truly next-generation MMORPG. Today, I have news to report; we are going to delay the release of WAR until Fall 2008. While we do not expect this announcement to be met with fanfare and cheering crowds; the additional time will be spent hammering WAR into an even better game that it is today.
During the most recent phase of beta testing, two things have become clear. One was that our key innovations - Public Quests, Tome of Knowledge and Realm vs. Realm combat - were all coming along extremely well, as was the first stage of our innovative crafting system. The second, that the game would benefit from additional iteration time as well as adding a layer of polish or two. Fortunately, as part of Electronic Arts, we are able to do just that.
While I have no doubt that the community will experience a wide range of emotions over this decision, I urge you to remember one thing (and to keep the tar cold and the feathers on the birds), that our goal has never been to release a game by a certain date but to release a great Warhammer MMORPG. We have not wavered from this goal and with the full support of Games Workshop, GOA and Electronic Arts we intend to release a glorious next-generation MMORPG.
As always, I thank the community for its support, patronage and its patience.

its aparently nowhere near finished yet. lets hope they really get all the time they need to make a decent mmo because all the mmo's that have been released in a beta state these last few years have sunk faster than the titanic

Well im not certain here but i think the ones who have some sort of final say isnt EA nor Mythic but rather Games Workshop and it might very well have been them who made Mythic take another 6 months to develop the game.

If that is the case yes. I am pretty sure the license agreement states that they can pull the license at any moment in the development of the game if they see its not moving in the direction they feel comfortable with.

I disagree. The MMORPG segment has turned into a very important segment of the pc gaming market. At the current point WAR plays and feels very much like a differently skinned Dark Age of Camelot. While DAOC certainly wasn't a bad game, this is not sufficient to draw in a large crowd of customers.
Electronic Arts made a major investment when buying Mythic and also buying the distribution rights to WAR. They are aware that this probably their only chance to gain a chunk of the MMORPG market and they need to ensure that it draws the crowd they hope for. Any game out there will have to compete with WoW and reaching 1 Million customers is most likely what EA hopes for. Thus the continuing delays.

EA always sucks at MMO - Earth & Beyond, NFS: Motor City Online, Sims Online etc etc

Then i would buy it, make love to it and then spoon it for all eternity.
But seriously you're probably right about EA being the ones who halted the release. I dont care that much though, as long as it's a Mythic-game at release i'm certain it will be good. I dont think they have to worry about pushing and breaking one million subscribers.
My guess is as follows:
Most of the DAOC-community, at this point around 200k players, will probably be jumping on WAR. Lets say an even 200.000.
I'm fairly certain it will draw a million or so of WOW's audience, mostly the ones who are disappointed in WOW's arcade:ish PVP as well as the ones who have gotten tired of it over the last three years (i fit in both groups ). So let's say an even million.
And then we have all the Warhammer-fans that wants to play it just because it's Warhammer. I'd say another 200k there.
So that's like 1.4 million, after that they'll have to actually do stuff alot better than WOW to draw more of it's flock

Oh. . . what the heck is WOTLK. . .?
Warhammer: I am still giving it the benefit of the doubt. More cities can be added in later and it still sounds as though it is going to have more content than DAOC had and DAOC was pretty darned good.
Not canceling my preorder over this news... I have experienced far shittier and more disappointment than that news brings with the latest crop of MMO's.

Wrath of the Lich King.
Anyhow, you don't think its bad news that with an impending release theyre still making HUGE changes like this? Major cities and CLASSES being removed? The game is going to be beta for the first year you're paying.
Also, if you played DAOC at release (which I sort of suspect you didnt) you'd know it was one of the worst games in history. It took a LONG time for it to get good, and that it did. As of today, its still one of the best games in terms of MMORPGs.
It seems releases for MMORPGs will never be smooth. WoW still is the smoothest (SADLY BECAUSE IT WAS SHIT).
