on purpose or not, the black bars are just shoddy game design and theres no excuse for it. its understandable to have them for certain cinematic sequences (ie crysis) but for the entire game, definately not.

Why not? If a movie was cut to 4:3 you'd be moaning without end. Same here. I'm starting to play games on WS res for the added space (don't have a WS monitor yet).

what? you cant compare a movie to a game like that, thats just silly.

the game should take up all the available screen space.. the information is there (the level, the character models...) so theres no reason not to show it. it makes all the sense of making a 1:1 ar for fullscreen... its just stupid, unnecessary, and makes no sense.

for what reason could you justify setting an unchangable ar in any game?

Movies aren't rendered on your pc, the game is, it should have an option to disable them, the reason they are there its not because because they think they look good it's because this game is a crappy/lazy port from a console game, given that consoles use 16:9. Unacceptable. If you like them, great, but people have the right to complain, the ones that buy the game anyway. And its only natural to ask if there is any way of removing them and if the "store version" will have it.

For seeing more of the game world? When in widescreen, you have larger fov, which in turn means more of the game world. So going 4:3 in AC means cutting the sides (like in p&s movies), so yeah, I prefer the "black bars." Same with all other games (except for some UE3 games in which you actually see more in 4:3 then you do in 16:10 or 16:9).

I suggest you read this to see the benefits of widescreen:
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php/Hor_plus
Then see this for some UE3 games:

Black bars in games are not needed because developer can implement dynamic FOV. There, user decides how much he want to see. Team Fortress 2 and Timeshift are two of the best examples for that, you see as much as you want to see. Win-win for both widescreen and 4:3 monitor owners, and imo standard we should see in most newer games. Only elitists with WS monitors complain over that.

well its up to the developers for a start as to how they set up their fov's isnt it... didnt bioshock actually give you less gameworld in its ws than in its fs?

i dont know if your understanding where im coming from, but just to be clear my understanding is that the game will have black bars on 16:10 monitors correct? if you keep the horizontal view the same, you could REMOVE those black bars and gain more VERTICALLY. EVERY OTHER GAME in recent memory does this... i just dont understand why you think limiting the vertical space when you still keep the same amount of horizontal space, is a good idea. seeing bars on a widescreen monitor is just absolutely silly.

also, isnt 16:10 pretty much standard for pc monitors? why would developers purposefully exclude a 16:10 setting other than out of lazyness?

No, you're wrong. With most games, the wider the res, the more you see. That's why I prefer the "black bars" here, because you see more.

Don't you remember the commotion there was with BioShock? Devs had to issue a patch for that, to allow users to see more in WS than in FS.

And ffs, I don't think limiting the space is a good idea, I think cutting space of game world (aka pan & scan) just because you don't feel comfortable with "black bars" on WS monitor is retarded

ok fair enough, but why remove 16:10 resolutions given how widespread they are?

should also say im not complaining over black bars, i dont think ill really care about them, all im saying is that its down to lazyness on the developers side, that 16:10 isnt supported as far as im concerned, because every major current game supports it.

I agree with you on that, but remember this is Ubi and it's a port, that's why. Most LCD TVs are 16:9, so that's how games are developed now. Seeing as the trend is to just pan & scan the 16:9 image to the desired res, I'm just going to play games on 16:9 res. That's how the games were meant to be played anyway.

People forget this. 4:3 is not resolution and not even dimensions its screen ratio. 4:3 is same as 40:30! You can have shots in 4:3 that show more than 16:9. Films are almost always shot in wide screen so if they cut them to 4:3 you see less, but in games it’s all in what developer do. And with dynamic fov averyone can have their own setup.

Example of cutting in favour of 4:3

4:3

16:9

They should have, that's the point. Having the black bars doesn't give you more fov, instead you only have less vertical fov, that's all.
I just don't see how someone can see those bars as a good thing.

At least there was a goddamn OPTION to disable WS mode in "Condemned" -- the lazy bastards at Ubi just couldn't be arsed to port/code "Assassin's Creed" properly.
Wait for the official release before blaming them, who knows they may have fixed that.

If the version on the net now it's not the final one we have to download the whole game again. I hope so because that was bugged like hell with a lot of random crashes and black bars.

its going to be beyond hilarious when all you (sorry i cant come up with a nicer word) morons complaining about "black bars" will see the same thing in the final since its a 16:9 game running on either 16:10, 5:4 or 4:3 resolutions.
