My VLC opens the subtiltes automagically if I have them in the same directory as the movie itself. Maybe its your shiny new mac. Razz

I simply use CCCP, it comes with all stuff included.
And yea, you have to have the .RTS (for example) in the same folder as the movie. And it has to have the same name as the film and be in the same folder.

Like this:
Shooter 2007 (name of film)
Shooter 2007.rts (name of sub file)

EDIT: Crap forgot U are using a MAC now ...like Trolldeg said...could have something to do with it.
But you are running Windows on it or?

In VLC, go to the video menu (in the top menubar) and go to the "Subtitles Track" option. Are you able to select a subtitle track there, or is it grayed out?

Also try naming the subtitle file to match the AVI ; if the movie is "movie1.avi", rename the subtitle to "movie1.srt" and try that.
from a MAC forum...
And there is a prog called "cellulo" that is supposed to do the same stuff as VLC...maybe

and back to VLC
Quote:
Once you're running VLC, go to preferences and deselect 'automatically detect subtitle files'. Then choose the subtitle file to be played with the movie using the 'browse' button (select both files). It’s not automatic but it works!

If your movie file is named orphanage-cd1.avi then your subtitle file should be orphanage-cd1.srt . VLC is capable of opening srt. So either theres something wrong with VLC player for MAC (which I highly doubt) or MACs suck in general (which sounds possible) Smile

Dunno if you are already know. When you REMOVE file extension in finder mac os x just hides it. In order to remove extension you need to rename file via "Get Info" inspector (File->Get Info / Command + I).

Also if you RENAME file extension via Finder and new extension is not known to mac os x, the old extension remains but mac os x hides it. For example, if we are trying to rename file.txt > file.avi mac os x will alert you whatever you know what you are doing and you will be able to choose the needed extension. But if we rename file.txt > file.qwe the resulting name will be file.qwe.txt but txt extension will be hidden. This is even if you select the whole filename and paste the new one ending in unknown file extension.

So, the better way to remove or rename file extensions is via "Get Info" inspector.

Also you may want to check the Perian project. Adds to QuickTime(and all apps that used it) the ability to play videos in various formats and containers.

Quote:
Perian enables QuickTime application support for additional Media Types:
  • AVI, FLV, and MKV file formats
  • MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivX, H.264, FLV1, FSV1, VP6, H263I, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), MPEG Layer II Audio
  • AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
  • Subtitle support for SSA and SRT

The MAC users are already punished, so there is no need for auto-ban.
