clearly, someone wanted the information in it!!!

Systempassword ? Do you mean the Windows XP password?
Ohhh boy, that is NO protection! Having your important files in a Truecrypt-Container would have been secure but you can delete the windows XP password without harming the system.

The thief just needs to download this special boot cd. When he boots from it, he will be the uber-super-admin and can delete all login passwords and so on.

I feel sorry for you.

Bios password. i spoke already with dell, and the only way to bypass that bios password is that they give a masterpassword. and they only give the master password to the person who says his client number for the product, serial number of the system, date of purchase, and amount of the purchase. so, he/she can't access my files.

We use a software called Pointsec at work. Don't know how good it is, only know it takes forever to start up your laptop and what have you. Any data that is copied over to a disc or USB stick will need a password to be opened, that's the main feature of it I guess.

If the only thing that's protecting your data is the bios password, then you're royally fucked sir. They can get to your info so fast it's not even funny. If you had your info encrypted with true crypt or something similar with a really strong password then there would have been a slight chance for your info to stay unreachable. But since the only protection you've got is the bios password, you're fucked.

If it was a HDD lock then the person who stole it is not going to be able to access anything. I use HDD lock and from what I have read about them, the only way to bypass it is to replace a controller chip on the HD or something like that. Changing it to another comp, resetting the bios...any standard method of bypassing wont work.

i think there are free ones to though -- install and have it call home -- track them to a coffee shop and beat some ass.

I have been slacking on this but everyone should run this type of software.

Okay, so you are not-so-screwed. If a professional stole your laptop, it would be possible to bypass some of the securities, but it's very *HARD* work. Hard as in, it would cost a lot more than I suspect your data is worth.

Truecrypt and the like are REALLY good, though. If you'd have that the only way to get the data spending less time and energy that our Sun has to offer (assuming that factoring integers is in NP and NP != P, and that DWave is a joke) would be to freeze your ram and to get the encryption chains out of the frozen ram. Which is easier than it sounds, but again, impractical if the data isn't worth much AND the computer has to be ON and the chains have to be loaded into ram.... anyway,

The BIOS password on most laptops are just that - bios passwords. Most work-grade laptops (and I'm unfamiliar with yours though) have a special encryption chip. Once some guys at my school lab were breaking an IBM laptop, and they managed in about a day, so these chips offer only modest protection. But that required some fancy hardware, including FPGA chips and soldering on the board. They also had some clue how to work their magic, being academiacs...

However, if there's no direct hardware involved or the entire drive isn't encrypted, the time it would take to break your laptop for anyone familiar with computers is next to none.

System password = Bios password. You have to make it past the bios to hit F8 to go into safe mode. It's actually a pain in the arse to break the bios password on some laptops.
