PostPosted: Sun, 15th Jan 2012 23:27    Post subject: Lar's World (Blog) / Larian Studios Thread
This is a blog started by the founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke. Some of you may have read some of his posts because I posted them in the Dragon Commander thread. I decided this deserves its own thread as Swen's posts are not only about that game. Every one of them is a great read, so recommending them anywhere is a good thing I think.

Taken from the "About Me" section of his blog:

Swen/Lar wrote:
My name is Swen Vincke.

I’m the founder of Larian Studios, an independent game developer based in Gent, Belgium. Larian Studios has been around since 1997 and I’ve been running it ever since, so it’s fair to say that Larian is a large part of my life and that I take whatever happens to it quite personal.

Larian Studios is known for the Divinity RPG series which includes Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity II: Ego Draconis and Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga. Currently we’re working on Divinity: Dragon Commander and another unannounced game in the Divinity series .

We also made online 3D worlds for broadcasters like the BBC (Adventure Rock), VRT (KetnetKick), NRK(Superia) en Lagardére(Gulliland). Probably the most a-typical series we made is Monkey Tales, an ambitious series of educational games.

I think almost all of our games at some point won awards, so we must be doing something right. My job on all games was either the creative director and/or the technical director.

The Lar & Larian names come from my favorite dog whose name was ‘Lar’. I also used it in the highscore lists of old arcade machines which only allowed you to enter three letters, so I guess it stuck.

The incentive for this blog was being called an idiot for the nth time by a certain Sergei Klimov, our newly appointed director of propaganda and publishing. His publishing outrage was focused at my habit of occasionally writing status updates on the Larian Studios forums. He said I might as well write my status updates on some wall in some desolate radioactive village and expect the same amount of readers. While I disagreed with that I succumbed to his pressure anyway.

My intention is to bring you regular updates not only about the life and tribulations of a game studio head, but also about how the games industry can be a vampire if you’re not careful.

New blog post... I'll just update my first post in this thread whenever there will be a new one. That should be ok for now, I guess...

Concerning their games:
Quote:
That’s why in addition to Dragon Commander, we’re also working on an unannounced RPG (which btw is closer on the release horizon than most people think J )

...

So we’ll try to make two very good games that will be released in 2012-2013, do this as cost-effective as possible, ensure that what we build will help us in the future, and fight to maximize our revenue from these games, so that perhaps in 2015 you might see the game this company was created for.

Last entry is pretty good.

About setting limits for marketings costs since developers have to pay those:

Quote:
Otherwise you’ll encounter situations like - ”Sure I went to a casino, but it was with the editor in chief of magazine X. We want to be in magazine X, right ? And the guy indeed likes strippers. But you got the article right ? Nobody wanted to write about your game otherwise” might be one of the arguments you hear.

Today we released Easter Egg Invaders, our first free Iphone game. Because we’ve been having a hard time coming up with ideas on how to market this one, I thought I might as well give you the fully story of what happened, and how we came to make Easter Egg Invaders. If you ever contemplated making an Iphone game, you might want to read this one.

Yup, that's what I always thought too ... it's the side journalists don't see, all they see is something not working correctly or bugging out and they attack the devs or blast the product as inferior. Journalists suck. Especially if it's IGN or Gamespot >_>

So journalists should keep in mind the poor game developer's hardships while judging a game?

His previous blog is great though, brilliant even. More devs should grow some balls and write about their awesome experiences with publishers and events.
