|
 |
Quote: | Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.
He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.
"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."
Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children. |

RIP Gary Gygax.
He was a pioneer in the game world. We should show respect.
I never got into the whole D&D thing but I think that due to my experience 'back in the day'. My friends were never into it. A few friends have said different now. Those are the ones I get along with best now.

Like many other young men I used to play D&D, it took up countless weekends and probably prevented me from getting laid more than anything else I"ve ever done. I never cared we all
would sit in my friends basement for literally hours, laughing and roleplaying.
Gary was a great man, and he literally changed the world. From collectible card games to all of the other roleplaying games, computer games etc... Gary took from other greats like tolkien and made it so much more.
Sadly we all role a 1 on our fortitude saves eventually. Sadly no resurection spells exist yet.
Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, but to weigh and consider.
To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
In all your remembering, remember that you have choices

The d&d world etc changed computer RPG's. I mean look at Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Dragonshard, none of thsoe woul dhave existed if it weren't for Gary.

WoW wouldnt have existed without Gary. Fact is, without DnD, we wouldnt have had half the games in the RPG genre of today. Loads of the spells and terms come from DnD..
